Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a legal affairs correspondent to join a team of reporters covering national security and justice issues.

The beat will encompass the federal courts across the country, developments in the interpretation of the law, and the administration of justice at both the federal and state levels. We want someone who can work sources aggressively in pursuit of scoops, pursue investigative opportunities and craft compelling narratives. Equally important will be the ability to write news and explainers quickly and authoritatively when big stories break. Successful candidates will have an established record of producing accountability journalism.

The ability to work collegially and effectively with others is essential as the reporter will be expected to team up with journalists across the newsroom to tell stories through words, video, photographs, graphics and data. The successful reporter will also be willing to help with our coverage of the Justice Department and the Supreme Court when needed.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed. There is a strong internal candidate for this position.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we resume normal operations, the position will not be eligible for remote work.

If you are interested in the position, upload a cover letter of no more than three pages outlining your vision for the job, a résumé and three pieces (as PDFs) you've written to our jobs portal by May 12. The cover letter should be addressed to National Editor Steven Ginsberg, Deputy National Editor Lori Montgomery, National Security Editor Peter Finn, Deputy National Security Editor Andrew deGrandpre and Managing Editors Tracy Grant and Krissah Thompson.
