Senior Director of Public Policy and Government Affairs

The Council of Graduate Schools (CGS), a 501(c)(3) national non-profit membership association dedicated to advancing graduate education, is seeking a highly skilled, motivated, and collegial Senior Director of Public Policy and Government Affairs.  The successful candidate will provide support and leadership to the Council on the public policy and government affairs areas of highest importance to our members.

This position reports directly to the CGS President and will be expected to work in a team environment along with the CGS Vice President’s and other staff members.  The Senior Director of Public Policy and Government Affairs major responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the development and implementation of CGS’s federal policy agenda; representing CGS in higher education and science/research based coalitions and events;  providing reports to the CGS Board of Directors on advocacy and policy in relation to the adopted strategic plan; providing supervision and guidance to direct reports; serving as the point person for communicating about federal policy and advocacy with CGS members; analyzing relevant federal policy issues and determining optimal responses; working closely with the CGS President regarding strategies and execution of government relations duties.

Requirements include, but are not limited to: a bachelor’s degree in a related field or preferably, an advanced degree in public policy, public administration, or a related field; excellent oral and written communications skills; a minimum of 5 years of experience in government relations with 2 years of Hill experience preferred; demonstrated interest in graduate education and/or higher education policy; experience and knowledge of the government relations and public policy domains; ability to effectively articulate policy and vision in communication with stakeholders and the media; strong writing skills and sound political judgement; ability to identify strategic priorities and develop associated policy recommendations; ability to exercise independent judgement, meet deadlines and carry out assigned duties; and be highly skilled in the use of the entire Microsoft office suite of products.

This is a full-time position with a competitive compensation package and the full complement of excellent organizational fringe benefits to the successful applicant.  Starting compensation is based on relevant experience and educational level in the Government Relations and Public Policy domains.
