Duties

Summary

This position is located in the Nutrition Guidance and Analysis Division-Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. You will provide analysis of nutrition data, including dietary pattern analysis. You will also assess dietary intake using data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and Healthy Eating Index. The purpose of the work is to inform the Development of National Food and Dietary Guidance, particularly the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, MyPlate, and USDA Food Plans.

Responsibilities

  • Monitoring, gathering, assessing, analyzing, reporting on scientific evidence in support of nutrition, food, dietary guidance, nutrition education and policy/program development.
  • Independently handles multiple assignments, coordinating with the Center staff and others as needed, and keeps the Leadership informed of progress, problems, and opportunities.
  • Presents results and findings of analysis, research, and activities for use by nutrition promoters and educators and others.
  • Design and lead a wide range of projects related to nutrition data analysis.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

To qualify for the GS-13 level, your resume must clearly demonstrate that you have one full year of specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-12 level in the federal service. Example of qualifying experience include the following types of tasks performed on a regular and recurring basis:

1.) Conducting dietary pattern analyses
2.) Performing research concerned with nutrition/health issues
3.) Developing science-based nutrition related policy.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Applicants must meet one of the following Basic Education Requirements for the Nutritionist, 0630, GS-13 position:
  • Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (external link) (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
  • Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists.
  • Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applications will be evaluated in accordance with Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) Delegated Examining Procedures and USDA policy using category rating. Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of two or three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. Category placement will be determined based on applicants' quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:
  • Data Management - Knowledge of the principles, procedures, and tools of data management, such as modeling techniques, data backup, data recovery, data dictionaries, data warehousing, data mining, data archiving, data disposal, and data standardization processes.
