The Sr Principal Database Administrator implements and maintains smooth operation and physical design of databases. Conducts performance tuning of indexes and databases in general. Reviews database design and integration of systems, provides backup recovery and makes recommendations regarding enhancements and/or improvements. Maintains security and integrity controls. Formulates policies, procedures, and standards relating to database management, and monitors transaction activity and utilization. May develop stored procedures and/or triggers. Deploy database updates, schema changes and configuration changes. Install, design and maintain database system software and implement database security. Monitor and analyze database performance and ensure effective and efficient utilization of database systems/processes. Maintain database dictionaries and support tools; develop and maintain accurate system documentation. Participate in the development and maintenance of strategic, architectural and tactical plans for the database and data warehouse environments. Perform database upgrades and install/test the patches, rolling back if necessary. Install DB application upgrades as necessary. Create DB instances and databases as required. Standardize DB installation across dev/test/production environments. Configure databases to USMS security standards. Monitor database performance, including resource consumption, and perform troubleshooting/tuning as needed. Verify backups and review transaction logs. Validate Backup and recovery scenarios. Ensure databases are integrated in USMS COOP plans. Support contingency and failover events. Ensure applications are meeting KPI/SLA. Assist with development of ETL scripts. Automate maintenance tasks. Maintain existing and new systems to provide a smooth transition of data from the legacy application to new application(s). Archive data on applications that are being decommissioned and ensure accessibility to the data Basic Qualifications: Experience maintaining databases in a production environment Experience with trend analysis and capacity planning Preferred Qualifications: Experience designing/developing/maintianing DBs in a High Availabilty environment. Experience with Oracle RAC and Data Guard. Proficient in backup/recovery using RMAN. Ability to recommend hardware architectures to support custom availability and throughput requirements. Proficient in DB and application tuning. Proficient in SQL, PL/SQL, Unix Shell and Java programming languages. Proficient in logical/phycial DB table design. Experience developing ETL applications using PERL and Python. Proficiency using DB tools such as RMAN, Enterprise Manager, DBCA and others. Experience with SQL Developer, TOAD or other IDEs.
