Job Description

The Washington Post is hiring an engineering manager for our publishing tools team, reporting to the director of newsroom engineering. We're looking for a caring, humane manager who can be a fierce guardian of our team culture.

**This position could be 100% remote in the US for the right candidate**

  • The publishing tools team is an agile organization employing scrum methods to continuously build and deploy software applications that allow our newsroom to author and organize content.
  • We're an inclusive group of engineers from varied backgrounds focused on delivering value while maintaining several custom applications and their associated microservices.
  • Washington Post Engineering is a department of more than 300 people working to support The Post's world-class newsroom.


What you'll do
  • Shape and grow the careers of 10+ engineers maintaining two critical software applications and several microservices.
  • Work with your engineering teams to shape our processes for delivering software more quickly, efficiently and reliably.
  • Work closely with product to guide the strategic vision for new feature development in our publishing tools stack.
  • Recruit, hire and retain talented engineers and administer an internship program.


About you
  • You can point to two or more years of successful engineering management experience.
  • You have experience building and maintaining systems in production environments.
  • You're comfortable working with multiple teams, only some of whom you directly manage, to produce a coherent software stack.
  • You have empathy for the Post's reporters and editors who use our software to produce our daily report.
