Responsibilities

The U.S. Secret Service is seeking retired (CSRS/FERS) individuals to support our integrated mission and immediately impart their knowledge and experience to the current workforce. If re-employed under a Dual Compensation Hiring Authority with an OPM approved salary off-set waiver granted to the Secret Service, annuitants are able to earn their full salary and their full annuity without penalty.

The selectee will serve as a Telecommunications Specialist (Technical Security) within the Office of Technical Development and Mission Support (TEC), Technical Security Division (TSD). Typical work assignments include:
  • Designing/modifying tests, installing and troubleshooting investigative equipment (e.g. audio & video surveillance, wireless network devices, mobile electronic tracking devices, cellular modems, network probes and routers and systems testers); serving as a troubleshooter of system malfunctions; providing sound technical advice and guidance in the identification, correction and remedy of hardware and software malfunctions.
  • Coordinating and preparing documentation used to conduct training and technical briefings to end users regarding the use, installation, remedial maintenance and basic troubleshooting of investigative systems and equipment; conducting initial and refresher training for personnel on telecommunications and investigative related equipment functions, enhancements and advantages/disadvantages.
  • Coordinating, acquiring, testing, integrating, installing, modifying/designing, maintaining and repairing various electronic devices, parts and peripherals used to support the protective and investigative mission of the USSS.
  • Collecting, handling, maintaining, securing and processing sensitive investigative evidence (e.g., audio and video solid-state (downloadable), physical and virtual recording media, etc.); controlling all investigative equipment related to investigations and other sensitive equipment that requires special handling procedures.

  • Submit to a drug test prior to your appointment and random drug testing while you occupy the position.
  • Undergo occasional travel.
  • The work is generally performed in an office setting or in an adequate lighted, ventilated and heated/cooled storage area, however, the work environment may also include field installations in urban rural areas involving moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions.
  • The work occasionally requires carrying and lifting of moderately heavy cases and pieces of equipment.


Qualifications

Basic Qualification:

You must demonstrate at least one (1) year of the defined Specialized Experience and meet the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR).

Specialized Experience

GS-12: You qualify for the GS-12 level (starting salary $86,335) if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level performing duties such as analyzing or improving communications systems, procedures, and requirements; maintaining and repairing various electronic devices or parts; and developing short and long-term telecommunications projects.

GS-13: You qualify for the GS-13 level (starting base salary $102,663) if you possess one year of specialized experience at the GS-12 grade level performing such duties as overseeing, managing or developing communications systems, procedures and requirements; modifying or designing investigative equipment; and implementing processes and procedures for the installation and maintenance of telecommunications related equipment.
