Summary

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, House Office Buildings, Tenant Services Division, Masonry Branch. The selectee will assist journey-level masons with maintenance, repair and construction of structures and surfaces of brick, block, stone, marble and related materials.

This is a career ladder position. The selectee will perform assignments progressively more difficult until the full-performance level (journey-level, WG-11) is reached.

Responsibilities

Tour of Duty: 4:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., Monday - Friday

MAJOR DUTIES:
  • Assists masons with the care, maintenance and repair of the interior and exterior marble of House buildings and grounds, including cutting, raking, cleaning surfaces by use of high pressure washers with chemicals, cleaning surfaces by hand using a variety of chemicals. Repoints joints, resets loose stone, caulks, waterproofs and repairs terrazzo flooring. Learns to perform decorative repairs on marble and other stone structures. Receives work orders or oral instructions outlining the work to be done and methods to be used in accomplishing the laying of whole brick, block and stone in straight, horizontal rows. Removes damaged portions of walls, partitions or other structures in preparation for repair of damage. Tears out portions of walls for the installation of doors and windows. Mixes mortar and assists in carrying materials and tools to the work site.
  • Assists with repairs of tile and terrazzo. Matches stone with the historic decorative work and structure to polish, cut and clean stonework. Assists in laying brick and concrete block, cuts openings in walls and exposed surfaces and demolishes masonry walls and staircases as needed.
  • Assists with maintenance and repair work in connection with the proper care and repair of other stonework or masonry in or about the buildings, including limestone, sandstone, granite, brick, block, glass tile, vinyl tile and ceramic tile. Assists journey level workers to make repairs.
  • Assists journey level workers in building new walls and reconfiguring existing walls that are made of many different types of stone, block and marble. Creates new openings in walls and ceilings for doors, passageways or fire exits, utility chases or equipment that are made up of limestone, sandstone, granite, brick, block, glass tile, vinyl tile and ceramic tile..
  • Cuts, polishes, cleans and matches a wide variety of stone including marble, granite and limestone.
  • Helps lay out the work. Erects and works from scaffolding, swing stage, and lifts. Carries equipment for core boring through stone and other types of constructed walls and floors. Assists with epoxy injection work. Performs seasonal maintenance to the exterior of buildings.
  • Must follow all relevant safety rules, regulations and standard operating procedures. The incumbent must utilize knowledge of and must comply with all OSHA safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner. Provides or receives training, either on-the-job or through classroom training, to ensure that all safety practices and equipment are fully utilized. Uses required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
