Responsibilities

This position performs installation, maintenance, and/or repair of utility systems within the facility. Duties include work involved in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical wiring systems and associated fixtures, controls, end equipment in industrial, institutional, office, and residential buildings. These jobs require knowledge and application of electrical principles, materials, and safety standards. Overtime and/or changes in the employee's standard tour of duty may be required upon occasion to complete assigned task. Performs work with little or no supervision in installing, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing electrical wiring systems and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment in industrial, institutional, office, and residential buildings.

Incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Electric Shop Supervisor. Work is assigned on a long-term, as well as on a day-to-day basis. Receives assignments, orally or in writing. Specific problems are discussed with the Supervisor for extensive and difficult assignments, however, normal, routine assignments are given with reference only to the desired results and time for accomplishment.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Working from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals.
- Performs preventative maintenance and repairs to existing electrical systems, fixtures, controls and equipment for furnishing light and power.
- Disassembles equipment, repairs and/or replaces parts and components, cleans and assembles.
- Makes operational tests and adjustments as necessary.
- Installs equipment.
- Cuts, bends and installs metal conduit, and installs properly-sized wires.
- Troubleshoots by checking or tracing circuits, locates and diagnoses trouble, repairs or replaces parts and reinstalls.
- Repairs and installs line starters, controllers, limit switches, pressure switches (high and low) and all types of controlling relays.
- Makes adjustments and solves problems by use of electrical formulae for computing voltages, resistance, amperages, capacitances and frequencies.

Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 8am - 4:30pm. Must have the flexibility to work outside the normal tour of duty which may include weekend and holidays

Qualifications

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Duties require physical exertion by working in confined places, walking, standing, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. May be required to work under great physical demands, such as lifting loads in excess of fifty (50) pounds, pushing, pulling, kneeling, climbing, and standing for extended time periods. Leg, arm, and back muscles arc used extensively. Frequently lifts and carries parts, equipment, and materials to the job site. Occasionally handles items weighing up to 100+-pounds and pulling cable up to 500 MCM in size, etc.

Working Conditions: Incumbent must work from ladders, scaffolding, platforms and mechanical lifts, working in extremely hot, cold, and damp areas; works outside in inclement weather. Incumbent is always subject to electrical shock or bums during electrical repairs. Other hazards include falling from heights, injuries from power equipment, and potential exposure to bodily fluids, TB, or other biological or medical hazards while working in the lab, surgical areas, patient areas, etc.

Conditions of Employment: Emergency overtime may be required. The work shall require the incumbent to drive a motor vehicle and heavy equipment. An appropriate, valid driver's license is required for the position. Shall be required to train and/or guide lower grade employees. The incumbent may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays, but are normally expected to work an administrative work week schedule.

Note: Incumbent must be respirator fit tested annually, this shall require shaving of facial hair.

Preferred qualification: Master Electrician's License or have the International Code Council Certification for a Master Electrician.

Your background must demonstrate 1) knowledge of electrical principles, including how various circuits, equipment and controls operate, fit and work together; 2) knowledge of the operation and installation of equipment in relation to the job to be accomplished; 3) skill in laying out work; 4) ability to apply mathematical formulas common to the electrical trade, e.g., voltage and resistance computations; and 5) familiarity with the various equipment and materials worked on.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C .

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. 1. Ability to do the work of an electrician without more than normal supervision.
2. Ability to troubleshoot electrical problems.
3. Ability to use and maintain instruments, tools, and equipment in an electrical shop.
4. Skill and ability to apply technical practices related to the electrical trade and equipment.
5. Ability to complete work from work orders or verbal instructions.
6. Ability to work with high voltage electrical distribution systems.
7. Ability to troubleshoot and repair electronics equipment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
