Summary

Leads a group of Journeyman level Pipefitters, Sheet Metal Mechanics, and Insulators. Performs the same level of non-supervisory work as the employees being led. Work includes, but is not limited to, installation, maintenance, and repair all types of water and steam systems including high temperature water and high-pressure piping systems.

Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities include but are limited to the following.

Assist the shop supervisor and act on his behalf when absent.

Designs and lays out jobs, instructs others in proper procedures, codes, policies, regulations, and the use of new equipment.

Passes to employees the instructions received from supervisors and gets work started; assigns tasks to be performed by members of the group.

Ensures that work crews complete their work in a timely manner while following codes, regulations, policies and safety rules.

Ensures that needed plans, materials, and tools are available for each job.

Ensures that daily reports are made to supervisor on the progress of jobs and requests for needed materials are done in a proper and timely manner.

Checks work in progress and upon completion to ensure supervisor's instructions and deadlines have been met.

Ensures that safety and housekeeping rules are followed.

Promotes the accurate completion of quality work assignments in a timely and effective manner.

Assists in developing training programs and assist in doing training for shop personnel.

The duties require ability to use computer software systems for work tracking and maintenance logging, and ability to utilize standard
office word processing, spreadsheet software and email programs.

In performing the duties of Pipefitter, incumbent is required to design, install, modify and repair new and existing systems to include high-pressure piping systems including Boiler Plant equipment and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation, and hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps, and radiators. Often required to layout and install, modify and repair new and existing utility, supply and disposal systems and equipment. This includes water supply, gas, oxygen, air, vacuum, fire sprinkler systems, all types of plumbing fixtures, hot water generators and sewer systems. Incumbent installs and makes repairs to Dietetic, hydrotherapy equipment.

Performs other directly related as assigned.

Physical Effort. Shall make installation and repairs from ladders, scaffolding, platforms and where parts of systems worked on are hard to reach places. This requires incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent frequently lifts and carries heavy materials such as pipe, plumbing equipment, iron bars and materials.

Working Conditions. Work is performed inside and outside and usually dirty, dusty and greasy and the incumbent makes repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. Incumbent is subject to the possibility of scrapes, burns, infections and communicable diseases.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7am - 3:30pm. Must have the flexibility to work outside the normal tour of duty which may include weekends and holidays.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
