ABOUT THE POSITION: Under minimal supervision of the Community Engagement Services Supervisor, the Volunteer Manager is responsible for all aspects of volunteer management activities that support DSVS. These duties include:
  • Recruitment, training, supervision, and management of 100 plus volunteers who provide 24-hour crisis hotline counseling, facilitation of psychoeducational groups, hospital accompaniment, court accompaniment, community education, data entry, and office clerical support
  • Collaboration with DSVS team supervisors to determine program needs and challenges that volunteer support may help address
  • Collaboration with DSVS team supervisors and staff regarding the performance of volunteers
  • Development, coordination, and facilitation of volunteer orientations, trainings, and quarterly in-services
  • Facilitation of presentations and outreach on volunteer management and Domestic and Sexual Violence Services
  • Development of the quarterly volunteer services newsletter
  • Establishment of goals and key performance indicators for Volunteer Services
  • Compilation of monthly and annual statistical reports
  • Expertise on the county-wide Volunteer Management Systems database and facilitation of trainings on the system
  • Development and administration of annual volunteer surveys
  • Attendance at interdisciplinary team meetings and agency meetings
  • Engagement with volunteer management organizations and networking groups to bring best practices and current trends to Volunteer Services
  • Development and revision of the DSVS Volunteer Services policies and procedures manual
KNOWELDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: The appointee for this position must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA):
  • Knowledge of domestic and sexual violence, stalking, and human trafficking
  • Strong engagement skills
  • Ability to accurately apply, interpret and administer regulations and guidelines relating to the assigned area of social service specialization
  • Ability to maintain professional ethics and confidentiality of client and volunteer information
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals
  • Ability to plan and direct the activities of a group of volunteers
  • Ability to schedule and manage workload sufficiently to meet deadlines
  • Ability to receive and apply feedback effectively
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and respectfully, both orally and in writing

VOLUNTEER MANAGER ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES:
  • Communicates and works with colleagues, clients and the community in a manner that supports the agency and program goals and objectives
  • Participates as a contributing member on interagency, multi-disciplinary teams, community groups and professional organizations
  • Solicits information about strengths, concerns, and recommendations from staff and volunteers regarding Volunteer Services
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of Volunteer Services policies and procedures and recommends changes
  • Assesses strengths and talents of volunteers and matches them with appropriate volunteer opportunities
  • Communicates performance feedback to volunteers

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree, plus two years of professional social work experience. A master's degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Contingent upon the area of assignment, some positions within this class may require specific certification(s) prior to employment and/or the ability to acquire necessary certification(s) within a specified time period following employment. The certifications are identified in the position description and employment advertisement .

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least 3 years of experience with management of volunteer programs within the human services field
  • At least 3 years of experience with direct supervision of volunteers
  • At least 3 years of experience in collaboration with and development of partnerships
  • At least 3 years of experience with community engagement, conducting outreach, and delivery of trainings and presentations
  • At least 1 year of experience with domestic and sexual violence, stalking, and human trafficking.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background, a driving record check, and a Child Protective Services check to the satisfaction of the employer.

This position is considered essential personnel and will be required to report to work during times designated countywide as approved for unscheduled leave regardless of the emergency situation (i.e., weather, transportation, other disaster).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sufficiently mobile to travel throughout Northern Virginia to facilitate presentations, trainings, and to attend meetings and events outside of the office. Ability to lift up to a maximum of 50 pounds. Ability to use automated technology. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. All duties are performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
