Purpose Statement

The Assistant Principal (AP) supports the Principal in leading the instructional program and ensures its alignment with division regulations for curriculum design and assessment. Provides and promotes a state-of-the-art curriculum and superior instructional delivery for the success of all students. The AP supports the school and works collaboratively with the principal to maintain the educational programs, consistent with community characteristics and school division goals and practices. This job is a direct report to the school Principal.

School Background

The James K. Polk Elementary School. Opened in 1965, Polk ES serves students in grades Pre-K through five. It is located on the west side of the city and is situated on a 13-acre campus. Over the past decade, the school received accolades including the 2019 Virginia Board of Education Highest Achievement Exemplar Award; 2010 & 2011 Virginia Department of Education Competence to Excellence Awards, and the 2010-2019 Winner of Marine Corp Marathon Fun Run Healthy Kids Award. Major renovations to the school building began in the 1990s to include a new library, office, music room, wired classrooms, and a secured main entrance. In February of 2010, Polk celebrated the grand opening of its new gymnasium. During the summer of 2011, Polk added four new classrooms using the same modular approach that was used for the gym. The School Division. James K. Polk Elementary School is a member of the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) in Alexandria, Virginia. The school division serves more than 15,500 students who hail from 114 countries and speak 119 languages. ACPS includes one pre-K school, 12 elementary schools, two middle schools (Grades 6-8), one K-8 school, one PreK-8 International Baccalaureate School, and the acclaimed T.C. Williams High School. Education: Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.

Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education license required, or the ability to obtain one.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years teaching experience.
  • Administrative and teaching experience related to working in socio-economically and culturally diverse school settings.
  • Demonstrated expertise in evidence-based curriculum design, assessment, and instructional practices.
  • Documented experience in leading secondary educational program development and implementation, including professional development in evidence bases best practices for diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience necessary to work effectively with students, teachers, administrators, families, and community members.

Essential Functions:

The candidate for this position assists the principal with:
  • Selecting, assigning, orientating, and evaluating staff.
  • Developing, supervising, and evaluating the instructional program.
  • Preparing the school budget and the master schedule.
  • Formulating and implementing professional development activities.
  • Interpreting and enforcing Board policies and regulations as well as school mission and goals.
  • Supervising the use and maintenance of facilities and evaluating custodians.
  • Supervising and coordinating student discipline and welfare.
  • Contributing to the school mission and goals to provide a positive learning climate and supportive community environment.
  • May be assigned other tasks and responsibilities as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment for the school and division.
