Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking an accomplished editor for its National Security team.

This is a demanding but rewarding position that will help manage a group of reporters who produce some of our most sensitive and ambitious journalism on national security and justice. It requires the ability to edit high-impact stories, both breaking news and enterprise; sound news judgment; the temperament to work in a high-pressure environment; and a willingness to experiment and collaborate to ensure our work reaches the widest possible audience.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience at a national or international news organization managing teams of reporters who have covered national security or criminal justice issues with distinction. Our reporters cover the Pentagon, intelligence community, Justice Department, FBI and State Department as well as beats including counterterrorism, domestic extremism, cybersecurity, weapons proliferation, criminal justice, the Supreme Court and federal courts.

Collaboration is a key feature of the work of the team's current three editors and 20-plus reporters. We value the ability to tell stories in new and daring ways and would welcome someone with a history of digital experimentation. We expect that a successful candidate will manage with empathy while leading with the ambition and drive to foster world-class journalism.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we resume normal operations later this year, this position will not be eligible for remote work.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

If you are interested in the position, upload a cover letter outlining your vision for the job, a résumé and three pieces (as PDFs) you've edited or written to our jobs portal by May 7. The cover letter should be addressed to National Editor Steven Ginsberg, Deputy National Editor Lori Montgomery, National Security Editor Peter Finn and Managing Editors Tracy Grant and Krissah Thompson.
