Summary

NEH is an independent grant-making agency of the government dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities.

This position is located in the Division of Education Programs. The Division of Education Programs is designed to strengthen sustained, thoughtful study of the humanities at all levels of education through grants to educational institutions.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees assessment efforts for the Division, so as to help formulate an evaluation plan, in cooperation with the Office of Planning and Budget, and supervise the collection of evaluative data on NEH projects, as well as on other humanities activities in the areas served by the Division.
  • Supervises the application review process and advises the Director substantively on funding recommendations. Oversees the assignment of applications to program officers, the selection of panelists and reviewers, the configuration of panels and the disposition of applications to them, and the selection of panel chairs. Oversees the production of the Committee Book, and the formulation of grant awards.
  • Collaborates with the Director in the preparation of divisional budget materials including monitoring the programs and any matching funds, and the travel budget for the Division.
  • Shares with the Director the supervision of the Program staff and Support staff of the various program clusters and the EDSITEment project staff. Manages human resources for these groups, including the effective and efficient use of Support staff. Recommends personnel actions to the Director, oversees development opportunities for staff, etc.

Qualifications

At the GS- 14 level Qualified candidates must possess:
1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level or equivalent experience.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, for example: Experience overseeing, managing, or advising on the day-to-day operations of humanities related programs; making recommendations or decisions on workload distribution and leading a diverse team; conducting reviews of grant applications and oversight of active grants, humanities programs evaluation, humanities outreach, and creation and administration of collaborative partnerships - or other professional humanities work of equal importance, difficulty, and responsibility. All related experience must be performed in a leadership or supervisory capacity.

Education

A Master's degree or Ph.D from an accredited institution in a discipline of the humanities is required.
