The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) is seeking a staff archeologist to be a part of one of the most highly-regarded park systems in the country. With more than 25,000 acres of parkland, nine RECenters, eight golf courses, three lakefront parks, and more, FCPA is an exciting organization to be a part of and there are many opportunities for staff to make a difference at every level.

Under general supervision, the staff archeologist performs and oversees archaeological studies. This may include field direction and laboratory analysis, evaluation and documentation of archaeological sites, research, report preparation and writing, the development of scopes of work, the completion of development plan review; the development and maintenance of GIS geodatabases, the creation of graphic depiction of archaeological records (e.g., field maps, drawings); the digital interpretation of archaeological data the preparation of images for technical reports and/or public outreach; the development of methodologies for field data collection; and collaboration with field and lab staff to integrate data in a GIS environment.

Illustrative Duties

  • Conducts cultural resource survey, evaluates and records archaeological or architectural resources for the purpose of making recommendations related to county preservation, planning and development projects;
  • Maintains local and state level inventory recording systems updates archaeological, collections, and/or historic site information;
  • Assists in developing revisions to the County's Heritage Resources Plan, the County's Comprehensive Plan, and the Park Authority's Cultural Resource Management Plan;
  • Assesses the impact of development projects on cultural resources;
  • Works with senior staff to develop proffer and mitigation recommendations for zoning and development projects;
  • Researches and records information on assigned topics related to the County's heritage resources;
  • Develops a comprehensive volunteer program including recruitment, selection, placement, training, certification, recognition and evaluation of volunteers;
  • Monitors the work of volunteers and lower level staff at work sites;
  • Recruits, trains, and schedules staff and volunteers;
  • Plans, directs, and evaluates the work of subordinate staff;
  • Collects and analyzes data, including archaeological site data, architectural site data, and/or curatorial data.
  • Updates archaeological and architectural site information with Virginia Department of Historic Resources (VDHR)'s Virginia Cultural Resource Information System (VCRIS);
  • Serves on multi-disciplinary teams in order to provide advice and assistance in planning and development projects both on park and countywide land;
  • Provides the public with information related to assigned functional area through reports, publications, lectures, and meetings and develops stewardship education materials, lectures or websites;
  • As requested, presents information to boards and commissions interested in historic preservation, such as the Board of Supervisors, the Park Authority Board, the Planning Commission, the Architectural Review Board, and the History Commission;
  • Assists senior staff with writing Requests for Proposal and monitoring work performed by
  • contractors.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of archaeological, architectural or artefactual resources;
  • Knowledge of local, federal and state regulations, codes, and ordinances related to historic resources, cultural resource regulations and permitting requirements;
  • Knowledge of laboratory and/or field safety procedure;
  • Knowledge of the National Register Evaluation Criteria for historic resources and ability to apply them in cultural/historic resource surveys;
  • Knowledge of all phases of cultural resource survey such as reconnaissance, evaluation, and the development of mitigation measures for the assigned specialty;
  • Ability to collect samples and perform lab analysis of artifacts and specimens;
  • Ability to operate and maintain field equipment used in cultural resource survey or curatorial facility;
  • Ability to analyze and manage complex datasets using databases, spreadsheets, and statistical programs;
  • Ability to write architectural or archaeological technical reports for the assigned specialty;
  • Ability to communicate technical issues effectively to a wide range of audiences.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Bachelor's degree in history, anthropology, historic preservation, architectural history, historical architecture, museum studies, archaeology or other closely related field; plus two years of experience in a specialty area such as archaeology, historic preservation, architectural history, museum studies or museum collections.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, art history, GIS, or a closely related field with 5 or more years of specialized experience in archaeology. Four or more years of experience with GIS and other computer applications as they pertain to archaeology. Experience in public outreach.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driver's license check, child protective services registry check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift up to 10 lbs. Capable of visiting and examining archaeological and historic sites and structures in the field. Ability to participate in archaeological fieldwork. Ability to communicate orally with the public. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
