Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for a strategic, innovative assignment editor to run its expanding Newsletters team. This leadership position will involve managing and implementing The Post's newsletter strategy and portfolio across the newsroom, as well as overseeing a team of four newsletter editors and editing a number of individual products. This editor is the point person in the newsroom for our in-house email tool, Carta, and partners with other editors to optimize the email components of our breaking news alert strategy. Newsletters are an important platform and powerful tool for The Post to reach new audiences, build lasting connections with readers, help readers build habits around our journalism, and serve and retain our growing digital subscriber base. 

Strong applicants for this position will have well-formed ideas about everything from the overall role of newsletters in subscription-focused news products to opportunities around new products to maximize our reach and meet the needs of new audiences. They should also be versed in the quickly evolving email landscape and knowledgeable about email technology, monetization and best practices. 

Outstanding applicants will meet these criteria:
  • Experience line editing, whether for articles, projects, newsletters or other platforms.
  • Experience working on strategy with teams inside and outside of the newsroom, such as Product, Marketing, Analytics, Engineering and Advertising. 
  • Experience managing a team in a newsroom.
  • A strong understanding of newsletter analytics and familiarity with or experience working in multiple email service providers.
  • Experience innovating with email as a platform to meet a wide variety of goals. 
  • A history of making fast, data-driven decisions and quickly pivoting when necessary.


This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we resume normal operations, it is not eligible for remote work.
