Job Description

The Governor's Health Sciences Academy at TC Williams High is offered in partnership with The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences. Students enrolled in the program pursue one of seven health-related pathways that lead to an industry certification. All academy courses are taught for dual enrollment credit through GW-SMHS with students graduating with 16-18 college credits. Students have the option to enter the workforce or pursue higher education after graduating from high school. The teacher will develop students' academic and clinical skills through courses of study; will monitor and evaluate a quality competency-based program implemented following the district approved curriculum; documents teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; address specific educational needs of students; provides feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc. The teacher will collaborate with colleagues at GW-SMHS to ensure the students are meeting college requirements. This position will support foundation and nursing courses in a growing Health & Medical Sciences program. This job reports to an Assistant Principal.

As the pathways are developed teachers may be required to work on summer curriculum writing. Teachers will be compensated at the standard rate for this work.

Qualifications

Education: Master's Degree in science or health sciences related field, dual enrollment course

Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education license required, or eligibility to obtain one. Nursing Certification/License

Experience: Experience working medical field

Essential Functions
  • Develop and update lesson plans, course assignments, and assessments in partnership with GW-SMHS faculty based on the pharmacy curriculum.
  • Facilitate clinical placement of students, through collaboration with university and industry partners.
  • Collaborate with the administration to provide industry certification testing for students.
  • Work with district administration to ensure the program meets and maintains accreditation standards.
  • Serve on program-related sub-committees and attend the bi-annual meetings.
  • Participate in Governor's Health Science Academy recruiting events, and promote the program to prospective students and parents and at least one day of the Summer Bridge Program.
  • Organize and participate in the academy and career-related activities such as industry speakers and field trips.
  • Teach foundation health and medical science or science classes where needed.
  • Provide students opportunities to develop and apply leadership, social, civic, and health care skills are provided through Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA), the Career and Technical Student Organization for health science education.
  • Plan student assignments to meet academic objectives and different learning styles.
  • Prepares a variety of written materials (grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student mastery.
  • Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and/or subject-specific assignments to provide an effective program that addresses individual student requirements.
  • Adapts classroom work to provide students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
  • Administers developmental testing programs, subject-specific assessments, etc. to assess student competency levels and/or developing individual learning plans.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress to communicate expectations and achievements and develop methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
  • Promotes communication with affiliating agency administration, staff, students, parents, and clients.
  • Counsels students to promote optimal participation and performance.
  • Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) to maintain the personal safety of students, provide a positive learning environment, and adhere to the Education Code and school policies.
  • Maintain teacher certification as per requirements of the Virginia Department of Education.
  • Adhere to T.C. Williams High School policies and regulations.
  • Adhere to affiliating agencies' policies and regulations.
  • Maintain current industry-related certifications required for the position.
  • May perform other additional duties or tasks as designated by supervisor.

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.
