Responsibilities

As a Chemist within the Geology, Energy and Minerals Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

1. Serve as a technical specialist for analytical methods in the radiogenic isotope and trace element laboratories.

2. Develop, adapt, and evaluate sample preparation and analysis methods that detect, identify, and quantify chemical substances.

3. Contribute to overseeing the daily operation of a chemistry laboratory for trace element and isotopic contaminants in geological, biological, and environmental samples.

4. Establish work priorities for laboratory technicians, creating standard operating protocols, reviewing laboratory procedures, and training new employees in laboratory safety procedures.

5. Perform chemical procedures on a broad range of samples that may include water, soil, sediment, rock, plant tissue, animal tissue, or a combination.

    • Driver's License/Driving Record - You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties.     Qualifications

    BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT for Chemist, GS-1320: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Chemist, all grade levels.

    A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics.

    B. A combination of education and experience-course work equivalent to a major as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering), including at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent of physics, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

    For GS-11:

    In addition to the basic education requirement stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:

    Possess 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education (54 semester hours or 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D. degree in chemistry or other directly related field of study or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in chemistry or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

    **OR Possessone year of appropriate professional experience in chemistry that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include performing chemical procedures related to radiogenic isotope analysis (e.g., U-Th-Pb, Nd, Sm, Rb, and Sr, and others) including preparation of purified and calibrated radiogenic isotope spikes used for Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry and for Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry; managing isotope labs (instruments, Clean lab, chemistry lab), upgrading and performing minor repairs of instruments, applying physical science and/or geologic/chemical principles, theories, techniques and practices; upgrading Quality Management System procedures to achieve optimal analytical data; training and ensuring all safety requirements in the radiogenic isotope labs are followed; using skill in interpersonal communications and group interactions to address and manage complex, technical scientific issues; and provide technical guidance and instructions to lower graded professional or technical employees.

    For GS-12:

    In addition to the basic education requirement stated above, the applicant must have one year of appropriate professional experience in chemistry that is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service.

    Examples of such experience include performing chemical procedures related to radiogenic isotope analysis (e.g., U-Th-Pb, Nd, Sm, Rb, and Sr, and others) including preparation of purified and calibrated radiogenic isotope spikes used for Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry and for Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry; managing isotope labs (instruments, Clean lab, chemistry lab), upgrading and performing minor repairs of instruments, applying physical science and/or geologic/chemical principles, theories, techniques and practices; upgrading Quality Management System procedures to achieve optimal analytical data; training and ensuringall safety requirements in the radiogenic isotope labs are followed; using skill in interpersonal communications and group interactions to address and manage complex, technical scientific issues; and managing or supervising professional research and/or technical services staff.
