The George Mason University, Center for Spatial Information Science and Systems (CSISS) invites applications for a Research Scientist / Sr. Research Scientist position. About the Center: The Center for Spatial Information Science and Systems (CSISS) is a University Research Center in Geoinformatics which conducts research funded by U.S. federal agencies and international organizations.

About the Position: The selected candidate will work at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center as a member of a research and development team to conduct research on, and prototypical development of, Geospatial Information System (GIS) and data science technologies that promote interoperable access to and use of NASA Earth Observation System (EOS) data products.

This is a full-time research staff position with full GMU benefits. The appointment will be initially for one year and be renewed annually or multi-yearly subject to performance and the availability of funding.

Responsibilities: * Research on and implementation of new technologies, such as data and web service standards and implementation protocols, AI/ML, big data, and cloud computing, to facilitate interoperable access and use of EOS data for research and application communities, particularly the GIS community; * Implement GIS services, especially the ESRI ArcGIS services, for serving EOS data products; * Develop use cases and demonstrations of NASA EOS data in various GIS application communities, such as disaster, air quality, energy, and water resources management; * Publish the results at peer-reviewed journals or conferences; * Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: * Ph.D. degree in geography, geographic information sciences, data science, remote sensing, computer science, or related fields; * Hands-on experience with Python; * Experience and knowledge of NASA EOS data products; * Knowledge of remote sensing algorithms; * Experience in ESRI ArcGIS system.

Preferred Qualifications: * Experience in multiple programming languages, such as Java and C/C++; * Experience in EOS data formats, particularly CF-netCDF and HDF-EOS, and in using netCDF and HDF APIs to manipulate data files stored in such formats; * Experience in scripting in ArcGIS system; * Knowledge of open Geospatial Web service specifications and standards, particularly OGC and ISO TC 211 standards; * Experience in Web service system development; * Experience with Open-Source and proprietary geospatial software packages, such as QGIS; * Knowledge of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning; * Proposal writing experience and a publication record.
