Developmental Editor Job Summary:

We are seeking a Developmental Editor to work on a long-term contract basis to support an industry leading client in Chantilly, VA and their mission of creating engaging nonfiction entertainment media that satisfies the curiosity and interests of lifelong learners. Meeting the challenges of a deadline-driven audio and video production environment, you will be part of a dedicated team that works with the top experts across the spectrum of academic, professional, and lifestyle subject areas to develop the words and the stories that bring complex ideas to life. At the position's core, you are responsible for working with experts and production teams to create engaging, educational content, with a dedication to quality and a world-class customer experience.

Developmental Editor Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with contracted experts to serve as a developmental editor, reviewing content topic outlines and script submissions to make recommendations based on content, customer expectations, and organizational needs.
  • Work with experts to ensure their content delivery deadlines are met for their topic outlines, written materials (typically, scripts), and any associated guidebook or workbook content (e.g., bibliographies, quiz questions).
  • In partnership with the Producer, the Content Developer provides continuity and accuracy of the educational experience for customers during the audio/video recording of material by ensuring each lecture delivered is coherent, well organized, and in compliance with written materials.
  • Interact knowledgeably and professionally with university professors and content experts across a wide range of subject matter, from the liberal arts and sciences, to travel, professional development, and health and wellness.
  • Write original content as needed for onscreen or voiceover (VO) delivery.

Developmental Editor Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree preferred; experience in research and teaching desired.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Strong storytelling skills, particularly for a popular nonfiction audience.
  • Attention to detail, with a keen editorial eye for catching errors and for improving the organization and clarity of scripted content.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including an ability to work comfortably with professors and subject matter experts.
  • Project management skills.
  • Intellectual curiosity across multiple disciplines.
