The Associate Vice President for University Development (AVP) directs all central and the seventeen unit (schools, colleges, divisions) fundraising programs, including major gifts, corporate and foundation relations, annual giving, planned gifts, and regional programs. The AVP plays a pivotal role in planning and executing university-wide fundraising campaigns, and works in partnership with the Vice President for University Relations and in close collaboration with the deans and directors in managing Maryland’s advancement efforts. This person will establish annual and campaign goals; develop performance metrics for development units and staff; work with development officers and campus partners to create and execute donor strategies; provide training and mentorship to fundraising staff; and maintain their own portfolio of high-level prospects. The AVP will encourage collaboration and interdependence between University Development and Alumni Relations to maximize synergy in outreach and engagement efforts. They will report directly to the Vice President of University Relations and serves on the VP’s Senior Leadership team.

The AVP will travel approximately 20% of the time and have the availability to work evenings and weekends as necessary for events, donor meetings, and programs. The AVP will represent the University before multiple internal and external constituencies.

Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
Bachelor’s Degree required.

Experience:
A minimum of 15 years of successful and progressively responsible leadership in all aspects of a mature development program with at least 3 years developing, managing, and interpreting analytics in a fundraising environment. Must have a successful fundraising track-record and strength in developing thoughtful donor strategies in a complex organization. Must have experience managing a budget, leading and growing professional-level staff, and building and managing relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge and understanding of philanthropy and fundraising. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to successfully engage and motivate diverse groups of individuals at all levels, including staff, alumni and volunteers. Familiarity with performance metrics and accountability measures and how to apply them to motivate and empower staff and educate stakeholders about the essentials of fundraising. Experience in strategic planning and a commitment to, and understanding of, the building steps for taking a research university’s advancement program to a new level of success. Ability to build trusting and productive relationships with the University’s leaders, colleagues, volunteers, donors, faculty, and staff.
