Summary

Incumbents will be given opportunities to provide basic nursing care and procedures in alignment with the competencies learned in the academic setting and validated by VA staff in order to provide care to patients/residents with acute to chronic conditions in a health care setting. function as a member of the nursing care team and assist licensed nursing staff in the care of patients/residents receiving preventive, acute, sub-acute chronic, maintenance, and hospice care.

Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

The position is responsible for appropriately utilizes glucose monitoring machine to collect and document appropriate glucose readings for assigned veteran, observation of patients, documents care given, observations and responses on appropriate tools or forms, performs oral and nasopharyngeal suctioning, administers complete tracheostomy care, including suctioning, monitors and documents patient intake and output, performs nursing procedures within scope of practice and according to policies and standard procedures to care for the veteran for such procedures but not limited to: enemas, catheterization, colostomy care, skin care simple dressing, application of braces and prosthetic devices, works on small group activities with Veterans/residents according to the patients/resident treatment plan, recognizes the residents' autonomy and promotes independence by means of respect, limit setting and individualized treatment, actively participates in Treatment Planning Meetings, utilizes equipment to promote the veteran self-care, such as; lift equipment, Hydro sound Tubs, and Veteran/Resident Wandering System, verbally provides patient information to the treatment team for inclusion in the veteran/residents' plan of care, participates in maintaining a clean, safe environment for the patient/resident, removes defective equipment, reports hazards, observes safety regulations, contributes to infection control, and utilizes proper aseptic technique in performance of duties, monitors patients according to levels of observations i.e. (I:I Veterans as well as Veterans observation status.), draws ordered laboratory specimens except for type and screen, inserts peripherally inserted vascular devices, performs wound dressing changes per orders, performs sterile dressing changes. Documentation/meetings Participates in treatment team meetings for resident care planning, enters information about the residents' condition in the chart, utilizing appropriate formats.

Work Schedule: Will be discussed with applicants based on individual's program
Intermittent for up to 1 Year with rotations to weekends/holidays, day shift, evening shift or overnight shift and other shifts; Schedules vary based on assignment and are subject to change based on agency needs.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Education Requirement: Enrolled in an accredited school of Registered Nursing.
  • BLS certification
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited school of registered nursing and have completed one semester of clinical rotation. (Candidate must submit evidence of their completed clinical rotation. This must be clearly indicated on their transcripts or a letter from their instructor).
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment physical.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-5. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-3 to GS-5.

Physical Requirements: Duties require extensive periods of sitting, standing, and walking. Working with patients requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, pushing, stretching and similar activities. The POA is able to rotate to all tours and on occasion, be reassigned to any nursing sections. Must be able to accommodate varying schedules and workload within established regulatory parameters. The POA must be able to physically lift a minimum of 35 pounds.
