Responsibilities

Serves as a Shift Supervisor for the Security Guard force assigned under the authority of the Senior Commander at IMCOM supported installation, US Army Garrison Adelphi Laboratory (ALC). Plans and coordinates the activities of a guard force shift, to ensure the maintenance of physical security standards; enforcement of federal state, and local laws and official orders and regulations. Develops training plans based on approved training courses and regulatory requirements and supervises necessary training for guard personnel in the use of weapons, protection against espionage, sabotage, and other organized subversive actions. Receives and reviews daily reports from subordinates and ensures the correction of reported irregularities. Responsible for ensuring the guard force understands their immediate role in protection of government and personal property, access of personnel and vehicles to the installation. Responsible for protection of government and personal property; control of access of personnel and vehicles to the installation; support of the implementation of emergency plans; and patrolling of restricted and limited access areas. Conducts daily guard mount to ensure proper accountability of all sensitive items, weapons and equipment; also inspecting the personnel appearance and the knowledge of duties of the on duty guard force.

  • Appointment to this position is subject to a two year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations
  • This position is subject to the provisions of the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban commonly referred to as the Lautenberg Amendment.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG).
  • In accordance with AR 190-56, requirements of Individual Reliability Program apply
  • This position requires the incumbent must be able to obtain and sustain state certification for operating the NCIC terminals.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete security guard training.
  • This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete CPR certification and First Aid training.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • Position is deemed Emergency Essential.
  • Incumbent must be fully qualified to operate a government vehicle. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the Department of the Army Security Guard (DASG) uniform in accordance with AR 190-56, maintain a high state of appearance and hygiene.
  • Employee must obtain and maintain applicable certifications in operating various electronic equipment and sensors.
  • Must not have any medical condition that precludes the wearing of a chemical protective mask and over garments.
  • Incumbent will be required to maintain physical conditioning and pass an annual physical agility test (PAT).
  • The duties and training required require for the employee to carry and deploy a riot baton, carry a protective shield and employ non-lethal ammunitions if necessary.
  • Incumbent must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification, and must qualify semi-annually thereafter in the use of assigned firearms/weapons.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service which includes: 1) Assigning work, to include management of multiple shifts; AND, 2) controlling access or patrolling restricted and limited access areas; AND 3) Providing on-the-job training to broaden guard skills; AND, 4) Leading or supervising subordinates.

Education

Additional information

  • Incumbent must undergo and pass annual medical exams of physical, emotional and mental stability.
  • Incumbent may be required to wear chemical protection masks, gloves, and other protective equipment, and may be required to be certified in the use of aerosol irritants and baton.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
