Job Description

The Post is seeking a dynamic newsroom leader for the newly created role of deputy director for Social and Operations. Working hand-in-hand with Director of Social and Operations Mark W. Smith, this is a key management position on our Audience team and an opportunity for a strategic leader to contribute across the newsroom.

Top applicants will be able to articulate industry-leading strategies that will result in our journalism reaching more readers and digital subscribers. Previous news management experience is required, as is demonstrated excellence at creating and managing a dynamic team.

The Social team includes editors who run The Post's main accounts across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other platforms. The Operations team is a group of editors embedded across the newsroom who help set, execute and monitor audience growth efforts. Both teams are charged with ensuring The Post is at the forefront of change in a quickly evolving digital news environment. This deputy director will manage the editors on the Social team and have leadership responsibilities across the Operations team.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate that they carry a deep understanding of traffic acquisition and subscriber engagement and that they are comfortable training journalists in the latest publishing best practices. Experience managing multiple social accounts, developing a unique and consistent voice on social platforms and building strategies for emerging platforms are preferred.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we resume normal operations, the position will not be eligible for remote work.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

Candidates should upload a résumé and cover letter to our jobs portal by May 10. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. The cover letter should be addressed to Senior Director of Audience Ryan Kellett, Director of Social and Operations Mark W. Smith and Managing Editors Tracy Grant and Krissah Thompson.
