Job Details

Through our certification program, standards, advocacy, and other activities, we strive to help save energy, improve productivity, and ensure a better environment.

AHRI has an opening for an Associate General Counsel with our Legal Team. This position works with the General Counsel to handle the day-to-day legal affairs of a 501(c)(6) trade association, including supporting AHRI’s regulatory and governmental activities in the United States, both state and federal, and advising on relevant energy and regulatory laws, specifically the Energy Policy and Conservation Act and the Administrative Procedures Act. The Associate General Counsel works to represent AHRI in legal proceedings (federal and state agency rulemakings and litigation), generate and review legal documents, complete legal filings, and ensure that the association is compliant with federal and state anti-trust laws. Duties include but are not limited to: 

  • Assisting in the interpretation of laws and regulations pertaining to the HVACR industry and the drafting of federal and state legislation.
  • Preparing and draft legal documents such as contracts, confidentiality agreements, and trademark filings.
  • Assisting General Counsel in working with outside counsel to prepare legal briefs and opinions filed in state and federal court, and assist with tasks associated with lawsuits.
  • Attending association meetings and review/edit meeting agendas/minutes submitted by staff to ensure compliance with federal and state anti-trust laws.
  • Preparing and filing federal and state lobbying reports and various corporate documents.
  • Performing administrative and management functions related to the practice of law.
  • Assisting in drafting and reviewing regulatory comments to federal and state agencies.
  • Assisting the General Counsel in advising AHRI concerning human resources, business transactions, liability, building codes, advisability of prosecuting or defending lawsuits, and legal rights and obligations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university.
  • Juris Doctorate from an American Bar Association accredited American law school.
  • Member in good standing of the relevant State Bar.
  • Five or more years of experience as a practicing attorney related to activities under the Energy Policy and Conservation Act and Administrative Procedures Act and/or regulatory law. 
  • Licensed to practice law in the United States (any state).
  • Experienced at providing legal advice and counseling to executive-level staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the range of applicable laws and regulations which impact the HVAC industry, and relevant to AHRI’s operations, legal, and policy issues.
  • Ability to develop and implement legal strategies and solutions.
  • Familiar with research technology such as Westlaw and the principles and procedures of legal research.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.

AHRI offers a competitive salary and a full benefits package including employer contributions to 401(k) and Roth(k) plans in a friendly work environment. The salary range for this position is $122,000 to $145,000 based on relevant industry experience.
