Summary

The Registered nurse provides ongoing evaluation of care management services in the mammography program. The RN will be located at the Richmond Veterans Medical Center aligned under the Primary Care Service. The Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for the provision of direct patient care for the delivery of quality nursing care to a diverse Veteran patient population.

Responsibilities

  • Provides assessment, coordination and planning of multiple health care services
  • Provides effective coordination of care of women Veterans requiring mammogram screening or follow up care
  • Provides assistance with cervical cancer screening and maternity care coordination programs
  • Maintains breast cancer screening databases on women Veterans to track the completion of the screening, results reporting and follow up care
  • Provides care to women Veterans and dependents requiring Specialty Care or testing at other VS's within the network
  • Serves as a Primary Care and ancillary resource to encourage mammogram screenings that follows national guidelines
  • Completes patient initial assessments and reassessments of condition for response to treatment
  • Develops and implements a treatment plan to meet patients needs
  • Promotes discharge planning and continued care through developing and individualized patient plan of care while collaborating with family and health care team
  • Provides considerate care, respecting patients personal values and cultural belief system
  • Establishes patient care priorities to ensure safe and effective patient care
  • Administers medication in accordance with established procedures/policy
  • Performs safe work practices appropriate for the position, e.g., how to report a safety hazard, proper body mechanics, or use of personal protective equipment
  • Identifies patient care related problems and reports findings to immediate supervisor
  • Provides appropriate care to the age-related needs of patients
RN Salary Range: Candidates education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. The recommended salary may be at any amount in the range listed for this vacancy announcement.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-Citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Preferred Experience:
  • 2-3 years experience in women's health preferably with women needing mammography screening services.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in assessing, planning, implementing, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating patient care actives in relation to healthcare screening processes.
  • Experience in maintaining healthcare databases tracking of completion of healthcare screening, results reporting, and follow-up care, with the ability to analyze the results.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional graduation form an approved school of professional nursing OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes to completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix CG6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District Columbia.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

Nurse I Level I- An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse I Level II- An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR and ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse I Level III- An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 year of nursing practice/experience; OR a Masters degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse II- A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Masters degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meet basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse III- Masters degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing, frequent bending, and stooping, walking, reaching and repetitive motion. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes-fast pace requiring handing of multiple priorities, frequent, a sometimes-noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
