Job Announcement

Reston Community Center (RCC), an agency of Fairfax County Government in Virginia, is seeking a highly motivated and self-starting individual to be the RCC Community Outreach Assistant. Provides support to the planning and implementation of special events and programs throughout Reston. Work is performed in a variety of locations throughout the community and requires communication with agency staff, partners, vendors and the public. Duties include:

  • Performs administrative duties, including data entry, correspondence, and supply management which includes inventory and procurement.
  • Under the direction of the supervisor, researches required supplies and content providers, prepares purchase order documents, recommends necessary equipment and/or materials, and organizes use of facilities.
  • Assists with the interviewing, selecting and supervision of exempt staff members including instructional staff, contracted leisure service providers (e.g., contracted entertainers, vendors, etc.), camp counselors, theatre technicians, volunteers and/or other providers.
  • Conducts community outreach efforts throughout Reston to promote and present programs. Attends community events, expos and fairs to represent RCC and to publicize programs.
  • Assists with the proofreading, coordination and implementation of marketing efforts with the supervisor and the communications team.
  • Provides valuable customer service, and serves as a liaison between RCC and other agencies or organizations, offsite facilities and the public.


Illustrative Duties

General Duties
  • Assists in the administration of the facility operations such as conducting inventory, preparing administrative and financial reports, and assisting in the preparation of the annual operating budget;
  • Assists in the ordering and receiving of supplies;
  • Assists with the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, scheduling, and evaluation of staff and volunteers;
  • Adheres to revenue and expense limits;
  • Ensures staff compliance with operating procedures and safety/security standards;
  • Informs the public of pertinent rules and regulations;
  • Directs residents to private and public resources and programs;
  • Assists in the development and implementation of community outreach plans to target underserved populations and to increase overall program participation;
  • Delivers customer service by distributing literature and providing information;
  • Assists as a liaison between County agencies and residents.
Operations
  • Assists with providing operational support by supervising the maintenance of assigned facilities.
Programming
  • Assists with providing Parks/Recreation programming support by developing and coordinating several specialized programs and special events;
  • Maintains records necessary to the operation and evaluation of programs.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation center and/or park management;
  • Knowledge of fiscal record keeping and inventory procedures;
  • Ability to use a personal computer, applicable software, and peripheral equipment;
  • Ability to direct and coordinate the work of subordinate staff and volunteers;
  • Ability to prepare a variety of administrative reports;
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, citizen groups, and the public;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:
Graduation from high school or a GED issued by a state department of education, plus two years of related experience in a recreation center, recreational park, or golf course operation or two years of experience organizing and coordinating public recreation activities or community affairs, as applicable to the position.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
CPR certification required within 12 months upon appointment, and recertification required every 24 months thereafter.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Achievement of a four-year bachelor's or bachelor's of fine arts degree in park and recreation, theatre or related field and two years’ experience in event or theatre production.
  • Knowledge of the techniques of event planning and production including event layout, vendor management, event security and safety, event permitting, volunteer management, public relations, and marketing.
  • Experience with RecTrac software.
  • Experience with event layout software (Visio, Vectorworks, etc.).
  • Experience with event and/or live theatre production planning and execution.
  • Ability to drive cargo van and/or box truck up to 18 feet long.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • The appointee to the position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check and Child Protective Services check.
  • Evening and weekend work required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to be physically active for three hours at a time. Employee will be required to do walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items up to 40 pounds. Eyesight should be correctable to 20-20 to read data on a computer monitor. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

Panel interview and may include a writing exercise.
