Responsibilities

  • Administers the selecting, acquiring/procuring, cataloging, authority and serials controlling, processing, digitizing, binding, preserving, and weeding of all types of books and nonbook materials.
  • Performs original and copy cataloging for materials in all formats.
  • Completes complex and complicated automated library system database duties such as code comparison, deletion activities, and records updates.
  • Performs duties necessary in overseeing the Archives, Library Special Collections Room, Library Historic Documents Room, and the library's Federal Library Depository Program.
  • Performs duties necessary to administer all aspects of on-site technology.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:
  • Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree; OR
  • A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services

  • Specialized Experience:

    In addition to meeting the basic requirement, qualified applicants must also have at least one year of specialized experience at the GS-07 or equivalent level. Specialized experience is defined as: 1) experience performing cataloging; 2) experience selecting, processing, reviewing, and deselecting materials; 3) experience working in Archives, Special Collections, Historical Documents, and Federal Depository Library Program departments of libraries.

    Examples of specialized experience include: Using a library automated system, has completed code comparison and deletion activities, records updates, materials cataloging and other related functions. In the Archives, Special Collections, Historical Documents, or other unique section of the library, has completed materials review, materials processing, materials cataloging, materials repair and/or preservation, materials shelving, completed inventories, prepared pathfinders or other promotional materials to increase access and use. In a library, has completed Federal Depository Library Program selection / processing / deselection and reporting activities. In a library, has assisted patrons and colleagues with network, database, computer and A/V troubleshooting. In a library, has assisted with the training of library staff on all technology based activities.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    GS-09 Substitution of education for specialized experience: 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's in library science or equivalent graduate degree, e.g., LL.B. or J.D., related to the position.
