Responsibilities

  • Develop new data sets for statistical computation in support of epidemiological research topics.
  • Conduct comprehensive statistical analyses after developing and acquiring data sets.
  • Perform analysis using Statistical Analysis System (SAS) programming and Structured Query language (SQL).
  • Perform complex data manipulations using SAS and SQL and makes recommendations regarding novel uses of data from disparate data sources.
  • Assess quality of existing data through exploration; to include analysis of frequency distributions, range, and record count.
  • Provide technical advice on optimal ways to process databases such as the MHS Data Repository (MDR) and the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC).
  • Use guidelines and precedents related to assessment of data quality.
  • Use large, highly specialized, health care databases to recover statistical information required for studies and reports.
  • Utilize an extensive knowledge of medical terminology and disease classification to explain variations in statistical comparisons

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Statistician (Health) GS-1530-11:

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc.

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes develop new data sets for statistical computation multiple database systems; perform data manipulations using automated software of Statistical Analysis System (SAS) programming; develop guidelines related to data assessment to advance data quality assurance. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

OR

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as statistics or mathematics provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
