Were Hiring Data Scientists! MPD is seeking data scientists who can use their expertise in causal inference and advanced data analysis to make a positive, lasting difference for DC residents. Join our team of social scientists and analysts at the forefront of evidence-based policing. Working within the Metropolitan Police Department, you will help generate actionable insights from large administrative datasets to provide timely, relevant, and scientifically rigorous evidence to inform MPDs policies, programs, and decision-making. From gun violence reduction to police training, reimagining police stops and response to innovations to improve public safety outcomes, you will have the opportunity to work on issues at the forefront of policing and public safety today. We're looking for someone in the DC/MD/VA region or who is ready to move as soon as we return to in person work. Our team resides at MPD headquarters, but during the COVID public health emergency, we are teleworking. To give you a taste of the data science projects weve recently worked on Conducting one of the largest randomized controlled trials of police body-worn cameras completed to date with our partners at The Lab @ DC Evaluating a novel training program with the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) on policing in historical and cultural context with our partners at The Lab @ DC Preparing police stops data for public release Analyses of gun violence in the District to inform the work of the DIstricts new Gun Violence Emergency Operations Center Youll also have the opportunity to collaborate closely with our research partners at The Lab @ DC and learn from a community of data scientists, social scientists, and technologists in District government.Job Requirements:Our Ideal Candidate Has A Masters degree OR equivalent work experience in economics, political science,statistics, mathematics, or other quantitative field. A drive to use skills in programming, statistics, and scientific communication to make a positive difference in DC residents lives. Expertise in data analytics and scientific methodology and a passion to apply those scientific talents to improve government and MPD performance. Proficiency in creatively determining which analytic approaches and computing techniques are most appropriate for a given data situation. Proficiency and creativity in visualizing, analyzing, and communicating insights from data. Expertise using R or Python for descriptive statistics, predictive analytics, machine learning, causal inference, and other scientific methods to learn about and derive insights from the relationships within complex datasets. Expertise in handling complex datasets, including importing, merging, and reshaping datasets, as well as handling duplicates, discrepancies, missing entries, and other quirks of large administrative data. Expertise, as demonstrated by advanced coursework or equivalent experience in at least two (2) of the following: machine learning; econometrics; design and analyses of experiments; or data visualization and interaction. Experience accessing data through a variety of methods including APIs, SQL databases, etc. A plus for experience designing and building data infrastructure needs. Experience with GIS mapping. Strong communication skills, in both written and verbal formats, and including under time pressure. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop and maintain relationships with a diverse range of agency, government, and university partnerships.
