We are currently looking for an experienced Laboratory Technician (temporary part-time) . Position Description: Duties include: Work with staff in support of Safety Operations and Support Branch (SOSB) safety objectives. Conduct routine laboratory safety surveys of Bio-Safety Level 1 (BSL-1) and BSL-2 laboratories; conduct surveys annually using a standard checklist provided by DOHS. Review documentation regarding the labs prior to conducting the surveys to evaluate training status of lab workers, previous safety issues, and biological registrations associated with the laboratory; enter safety survey findings into an online database maintained by DOHS. Conduct injury and illness investigations; perform surveys and interviews to identify contributing factors and root causes of the incidents; make recommendations for preventing recurrence of the incidents. Conduct follow-up reviews of the incidents to determine if corrective actions were adequately taken; document findings, recommendations and follow-up information in an online database. Work with staff to compile and analyze data; identify accident/injury trends; assist in the preparation of reports; i nitiate investigations within 5 working days of assignment; complete and close out investigations within 30 calendar days. Annually review inventory records, reports and documents associated with NIH repository materials; observe laboratory staff member opening storage containers (eg freezers, cold rooms, storage areas, etc.); randomly select sample materials to determine that the: material is properly labeled; container is appropriate for the stored material; material is correctly recorded on the written inventory list. Document findings in DOHS inventory tracking system; report identified discrepancies to the Laboratory Safety Team Lead. Respond to calls and inquiries, regarding safety concerns, from the NIH community; provide technical support and guidance in resolving safety issues; consult with SOSB safety specialists to help resolve complex problems or problems posing an immediate hazard to lab staff or the NIH community; maintain an electronic database of all call and inquiry responses. Provide summaries of safety deficiencies and injury investigation findings to SOSB staff responsible for the assigned laboratory; provide reports at least quarterly to allow the SOSB staff to communicate findings to the IC safety committees. Distribute DOHS educational and outreach materials to laboratories as part of routine safety surveys. Where appropriate, act as a Liaison with Institute/Center. Job Requirements: Position Requirements: Bachelor's' degree in Biology, Virology, Microbiology, or a related discipline. Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a biological laboratory. The ability to implement, with the assistance of SOSB personnel, new and/or established analytical techniques to evaluate survey and investigation data. A working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook) and other data management programs. Strong communications skills, both oral and written. Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
