Summary

This position is located in Manassas National Battlefield Park, in the Division of Maintenance. Performs simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, buildings and related utilities, and vehicles and equipment.

Students who live or attend school within the local commuting area, 50 mile radius of Manassas, Virginia.

Responsibilities

Temporary appointment not-to-exceed one year but m­ay be extended each year without further competition, if you continue to meet the eligibility requirements under the Pathways Internship program and funding is available.

• Performs minor plumbing and repairs such as tightening or replacing fittings and fixtures.
• Collects trash, cleans and services chemical toilets, restrooms and visitor facilities.
• uses simple hand tools and power tools safely.
• Performs routine maintenance on sites and trails.
• Operates light trucks to pick up supplies and transport materials.
• Assists higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of work.
• Receives, unloads and processes incoming shipments following established procedures.
• Performs minor painting using brushes and rollers.
• Performs minor carpentry repairs using hand tools.
• Performs routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities.

• You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
• You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
• You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
• The entire period served under the Intern Program counts as a trial period.
• Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Applicants must be physically fit and, as required in the Office of Personnel Management Qualifications Handbook X-118C, must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. A specific length of time and experience is not required. Qualification requirement emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. You must meet the 2 point level on the screen out factor/element and an average of level 2 on all factors/elements listed.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

You must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Agreement which specifies the conditions of your employment as we've indicated in this job announcement. You must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of your appointment. To verify that you do, we will require proof of your continued enrollment and good standing each semester or grading period throughout your internship. Failure to do so will result in termination of your internship and employment.

Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked to be on, are hard to reach, that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and be exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures generally 0 to 90+ degrees F). Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing that is sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. May work with dangerous chemicals (paints, solvents, etc.) and around moving equipment. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects. Incumbent may be required to work during operational emergencies that can include evening, night, weekend, and/or Holiday work. The incumbent will operate a motor vehicle(s) and must have a valid State or District of Columbia Driver's License.

The incumbent is required to wear the regulation NPS uniform for the position.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.
