Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for an editor to join the News Analytics team within the Audience department. The News Analytics team sets standards for how the reporters and editors in our newsroom use analytics and metrics. This includes creating a vision for which metrics matter and why, as well as creating tools and trainings to support our journalists. 

This editor should have a clear point of view on which metrics editors and reporters can and should use to inform editorial strategy, and an enthusiasm for improving data fluency in the newsroom. 

Collaboration with key stakeholders will be central to this role, including the company-wide Analytics team, top newsroom editors, and the Subscriptions and Engineering teams. 

Responsibilities: 
  • Lead deep dives and analyses of coverage areas, focusing on contextualizing insights for editors, reporters and senior leadership. 
  • Train reporters and editors on how to factor analytics into editorial decisions.
  • Collaborate with the company-wide Analytics team and Engineering team to design and deliver tools, such as dashboards to help reporters look at key metrics over time.
  • Be a liaison to the company-wide Analytics team, collaborating to define key performance indicators and frameworks to inform tactics and initiatives.
  • Build relationships with editors and senior leadership to identify analytics priorities and form strategies backed by quantitative and qualitative analysis. 


We are looking for someone with most of the following requirements: 
  • Two-plus years of experience in digital media, news, market research, analytics or related field.
  • Familiarity with tools and suites like Google Analytics, Adobe Omniture, Chartbeat, Parse.ly, Excel. 
  • Experience using data to analyze content areas.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, especially in translating data and trends for non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working closely with reporters and editors.


Strong candidates will have some of the following skills: 
  • Experience working with stakeholders representing analytics, research, engineering and/or product teams.
  • Experience managing and rolling out products, such as new dashboards, tools or reports.
  • Experience growing scale and/or engagement for a news publisher.


This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we resume normal operations, it is not eligible for remote work.
