Summary

The Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center is recruiting for three full time Physician - Emergency Department Nocturnist to perform clinical duties and effective outpatient care in the Emergency Department. The incumbent is accountable to the Section Chief of the Emergency Department. Responsible for providing the most effective delivery of outpatient care.

Responsibilities

Clinical:
  • Provides quality patient-centered patient care to presenting adults age 18-65 and older adults age 65+ as assigned by Chief, Medical Service; stabilizes presenting patients under the age of 18 as required prior to transfer to an appropriate site of care.
  • Demonstrate sound decision-making skills, both clinical and administrative, which bring credit to the profession and serve to enhance the distinctive and contributory role of Physicians.
  • Facilitate the delivery of appropriate patient care in collaboration with other health professionals, medical center staff, and management.
  • Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests necessary to complete the ED evaluation.
  • Stabilize all critically ill or injured patients.
  • Participates as a peer reviewer process when requested.
  • Admit patients to the hospital or discharge them from the ED with appropriate follow-up.
  • Discuss treatment plan(s) with patient and or family/caregiver (following COBRA and HIPAA guidelines).
  • Exhibits leadership in suggesting, and, with approval by the Chief, Emergency Department, instituting changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and finding from research and studies. Keeps informed of developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education, both formal and informal.
  • Coordinate patient care with consultants as deemed appropriate.
  • Supports the safety, occupational health, and fire protection program by the application of approved standards, regulations, practices, and work methods.
  • Completes all medical record documentation in CPRS within prescribed timeframes.
  • Utilizes problem solving methodologies to resolve problems that impact on patient care or staff performance.
  • Plans implements, and evaluates care based on age specific requirements of the patient.
  • Makes decisions based on professional standard
Academic:
  • Participates in the formal education of the residents, fellows and medical students by presenting teaching rounds, lectures, conferences, etc.
  • Participates in grading sessions for medical students and trainees assigned to their service.
  • Demonstrates and trains medical students/resident, fellows in medical procedures that are required to provide optimal patient care appropriate to their expertise.
  • Meets scholarly activity requirements, including peer-reviewed publication and national professional organization participation, as required
Research :
  • Supports the medical Center-wide research mission.
  • Assists in conducting studies regarding treatment modalities, outcomes, and other aspects of patient care when appropriate.
  • If involved in an ongoing research project, abides by all VA regulations governing research
  • protocols/policies and/or procedures.
  • Encourages participation in clinical research among other staff members.
Work Schedule: Primary nocturnist" positions, and as such work schedule will be about 2/3 night shifts and 1/3 day shifts. Nights in general are 7p-7a. This includes all weekends and holidays - specifics to be discussed at time of interview.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience:
  • Preferred board certified or board eligible in Emergency Medicine; will consider Physician board certified in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine, if you have EM experience
  • Must have American BLS and ACLS Certifications.

Physical Requirements: The physician should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position including examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan and educate residents. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to 4 hours) walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. The incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable; and capable to perform the duties of the position.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
