Summary

Join the team! This position is located in the Headquarters Office of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Office of Compliance (EXC), Division of Resources Management (CRM) and will serve as a member of the Fast Track Team. The Fast Track Team is responsible for removing potentially hazardous consumer products from the marketplace as quickly and efficiently as possible by negotiating product recalls.

Responsibilities

New Compliance Officers are trained by the Agency and are paired with experienced Compliance Officers who provide one-on-one guidance on evaluating and negotiating consumer product recalls. Compliance Officers on this team review proposed corrective action plans and negotiate recalls with companies or their legal representative.

The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of or have practical experience with product safety issues and negotiations. As a Compliance Officer, you will perform the following duties:
  • Review proposed corrective action plans from recalling companies to determine if they comply with requirements.
  • Coordinate the assessment of product safety issues and proposed remedies.
  • Communicate and coordinate with recalling companies, including negotiating and monitoring product Coordinate the drafting of press releases, safety alerts, and other public notices.
  • Participate in the development of compliance programs and case strategies.
  • Provide guidance to other offices and industry on the Fast Track Recall Program.

Depending on your status, this position may require serving a 1-year probationary period.

Qualifications

All applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

GS-07: 1) Ability to collaborate with others to achieve the desired outcome; 2) Ability to analyze information and make informed decisions in support of an objective; AND 3) ability to use basic negotiation techniques to reach agreements.

GS-09: 1) Knowledge of manufacturing and marketing practices of consumer products; 2) understanding scientific and/or technical principles relevant to the analysis of consumer product safety issues; 3) ability to use basic negotiation techniques to reach agreements; AND 4) ability to present issues both orally and in writing.

GS-11:
1) In-depth knowledge of manufacturing and marketing practices of consumer products; 2) experience in applying scientific and technical principles to the analysis of product safety issues; 3) experience in negotiating agreements; AND 4) ability to present complex issues orally and in writing.

IF EDUCATION IS USED TO SUBSTITUTE FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

GS-9: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B or J.D., if related or 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-7.

GS-11: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related or 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-9.
