Summary

This position is located within Commander Navy Mid-Atlantic Region, Fleet and Family Readiness Program at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA. The purpose of this position is to provide a variety of duties in support of the MWR Outback Rental.

Responsibilities

This position may perform some or all of the following duties as assigned.

Issues and receives a variety of recreation equipment to authorized personnel, and assists patrons with questions and appropriate selections. Advises patrons in safe boating and camping techniques and administers a safe boating test to patrons as applicable. Discusses rental requests with patrons and ensures his/her understanding of all safety requirements prior to renting equipment. Collects money for rentals, explains rules, and completes rental agreements. Operates cash register and completes the Daily Activity Report (DAR), ensures all cash handling/reporting/security requirements are met, verifies the amount of money collected and drops the cashier bag into the drop safe each day. Monitors and updates bad check listing. Charges for lost or damaged equipment. Loads and unloads equipment to and from patrons vehicles. Checks equipment for damage and based on knowledge, estimates the cost of repair. Contacts patrons when gear is overdue to return.

Responsible for the minor maintenance and repair of equipment and ensuring that other equipment is maintained in good working condition at all times. Reports damages or losses immediately.

Responsible for researching catalogs and/or outside vendors and making recommendations for purchase/replacements. Daily, updates computerized system to track all equipment check in/out and RV/boat storage lot patron data.

Controls the equipment rental area and ensures cleanliness of the facility and all equipment at all times. Complies with all environmental, security, safety and administrative requirements within the outdoor recreation facility and equipment. Takes action as applicable to correct deficiencies.

In the absence of the Campground/RV Host, accepts reservations and prepares contracts for picnic and cabana areas. Escorts guests to their assigned space and explains facilities available. Maintains registration log of all guests, collects fees and issues receipts for space rented. Maintains records and prepares reports pertaining to the operation.

Performs a variety of general maintenance tasks by clearing, landscaping, cutting grass, edging and etc., servicing equipment before use. Performs minor repairs and adjustments as necessary. Picks up debris, empties all trash receptacles daily. Maintains restrooms in clean, orderly and sanitary condition. Cleans, disinfects and deodorizes lavatories, sinks and toilet bowls. Cleans mirrors and water fountains. May make minor repairs to facilities and equipment. Reports any maintenance problems, material deficiencies and unsafe conditions or discrepancies that cannot be repaired in-house to the supervisor.

Qualifications

A qualified candidate possess the following:

Must have sufficient knowledge and experience to rent and maintain a large selection of recreation equipment including: camping and boating equipment, picnic equipment, and other recreational equipment. Must be able to maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups. Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Must be able to read and write sufficiently to prepare rental documents, complete accounting and cash handling requirements, and explain the proper use and safe operation of equipment. Must possess basic math skills and the ability to run a cash register and prepare cash documentation. Must have the ability to operate and perform routine maintenance and repair on a variety of equipment used in outdoor maintenance, such as week eaters, lawn mowers, edgers, etc., reporting any safety discrepancies to the supervisor. Knowledge of basic cleaning and janitorial techniques and procedures as well as the ability to work with basic equipment, materials and supplies used in maintaining facilities in a clean, sanitary state. Certifications in welding or small (2- to 4-cycle) engine repair preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical requirements for the job are lifting, climbing, pulling, stooping, walking and standing on a recurring basis. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors under all weather conditions. Lifting of items over 45 pounds will be with assistance. Safety equipment will be provided wherever needed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbent must possess and maintain a current state Drivers license. This is a position of trust and requires the successful completion of a National Agency Check or other background screening upon hire and periodically thereafter as a condition of employment. Work may be subject to seasonal peaks and may include an irregular tour of duty, including evening and weekend work.

Salary is dependent on experience and/or education.

Some positions have special requirements. Selectee may be required to complete a one (1) year probationary period. Participation in Direct Deposit/Electronic Fund Transfer within the first 30 days of employment is required. We utilize E-Verify to confirm selectee's eligibility to work in the United States.
