Summer Camp for Youth and Teens

It is that wonderful time of year again - camp time! Neighborhood and Community Services’ (NCS) Camp Fairfax and Teens in Action programs begin June 14. Working at summer camp is a great choice for your career and community. On top of all the fun that you will have leading campers in-person and online in exciting activities, you will also play an important role in shaping and enriching the lives of youth and teens. During summer camp, campers learn important life lessons about community service, teamwork and explore new recreational activities ranging from STEAM, Health & Wellness, sports, theater, dance, arts, crafts and more. As a leader and a mentor, you can be a bright spot in someone else’s day!

Instructions: Click the link below to register for one of five open hire sessions where you will be interviewed virtually for an Activity Facilitator position located at one of the community centers. After completing the brief online questionnaire, you will be contacted and provided with an interview time slot. Positions: Activity Facilitators (Recreation Leader IIs). Part-Time. Some positions offer limited benefits*.

This announcement will be used to fill multiple Activity Facilitator positions (Recreation Leaders IIs) located at various NCS facilities across Fairfax County.

Seeking Activity Facilitators looking for part-time opportunities where they can engage in the community around them and make an impact in the lives of Fairfax County residents. Activity Facilitators plan, prepare, and lead community center activities that are age and ability appropriate. Work collaboratively to plan and organize activities/programs that focus on prevention and are based on community needs. Implement programming techniques that serve a multi-cultural and economically diverse population. Lead scheduled activities, encouraging full participation, enjoyment, and group involvement that meet the desired outcomes. Assist in the marketing of programs and outreach to the community. Provide leadership and ensure the safety of all center participants. Interact positively, supportively, and reassuringly with the participants. Act as a role model and mentor. Accountable for quality of programs provided to the community participants.

Facilitators will assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of in-person and virtual programming to offer enriching on-demand and live activities. Use of Zoom and other video conferencing platforms will be required to engage participants during hybrid programming.

Hiring Teams at our Community Centers, Senior Centers and Teen Centers prefer candidates with skills in the areas of art, cooking, costume design, educational tutoring, graphic design, music education, theatre, science, and sports.

Schedule:

-Positions vary.

-We have positions that work on average 17 hours per week (a maximum of 900 hours per calendar year), and other positions that work between 20 and 30 hours per week (a minimum of 1,040 hours and maximum of 1,560 hours per calendar year).

-Specific weekly hours for all positions will be determined based on agency/program needs.

-For all positions, there is no guarantee of a minimum number of hours worked per week.

Hours:

-Work hours vary from 9:00 a.m. to 10 p.m., weekdays and Saturdays.

Location:

-Various sites across Fairfax County.

-Please see information below on NCS’s four Service Regions.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation or GED; plus experience working with youth, adults and/or families. Must be 18 years of age. Individuals hired for positions working with teens must be at least 21 years of age.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, and a driver's license check to the satisfaction of the employer. Must complete CPR, First AID, AED training within 30 days of hire which is provided by employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Previous experience working with community recreational programs serving youth, adults and/or families.
  • Previous experience with youth development and/or human growth and development.
  • Ability to drive a 14-passenger (non-CDL) bus.
  • Bilingual in English and a second language, preferred but not required.
