Responsibilities

The Marine Machinery Repairer:
  • Works with other Fleet elements to maintain hull integrity and DH envelopes of floating assets including verification of all hull fittings as being properly secured and leak-free. Performs machinery maintenance and repairs aboard the full range of fleet craft including tugs, crane barges, utility boats, patrol boats and transportation craft.
  • Investigates unstable or listing vessels and takes emergency actions to stabilize vessel(s) by de-watering, ballasting, or other means as directed.
  • Is required to complete satisfactory Phase IV inspections, while meeting all requirements concerning specifications, safety, and manuals that pertain to the inspection or maintenance and repair being performed. Is required to interact with the other work groups in performance of Phase IV Maintenance and other work, supporting all mechanical requirements for those groups as needed.
  • Is responsible for methods and procedures involving the installation, overhaul, repair and maintenance of various types of marine machinery equipment and systems and determine the nature and extent of repairs required and makes these needed repairs based on their judgment of the situation.
  • Sounds and records all tanks and voids of specified ships to accurately determine the locations and amounts of fuel oil, lube oil, and water board vessels, recording results on approved results.
  • Interprets manuals, blueprints, sketches and specifications, application of standard formulas, shop mathematics, trade theories, and industry practices in calculating and solving problem situations.
  • Operates, rotates oar move over by hand or motive power all pumps, compressors, turbines, blowers, winches, steering engines, reduction gears, shafting, hydraulic cargo hatch systems, and all associated equipment, values, and piping systems related thereto.
  • Use portable power tools and all types of mechanical hand tools and close tolerance measuring devices and will use lathes, drill press, milling machines, valve grinders, etc.
  • Examines and troubleshoots repairs required, and/or materials and parts needed in order to complete assignments. Rebuilds components, disassemble and assemble engines, shafts, valves, etc.
