This position is located in the National Weather Service (NWS), National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), Central Operations, Infrastructure, and Web Services Branch (IWSB) with one vacancy in College Park, MD.

Responsibilities

The working title for this position is a Linux Team Lead. As a Linux Team Lead, you will perform the following duties:
  • Manage National Center for Environmental Prediction's (NCEP) Infrastructure and Web Services Branch (IWSB) Linux team, providing leadership and guidance to support continuous, highly critical operations 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  • Supervise, evaluate, instruct, guide, and support IWSB IT Specialists to adapt Linux methods, capabilities, and applications to resolve problems with NCEP software, hardware, and systems management.
  • Liaise with NCEP's IWSB helpdesk to troubleshoot and resolve software faults, security, and traffic management issues.
  • Consult, propose, design, implement, test, and update NCEP enterprise architecture, including hardware and software infrastructure technologies, to enhance functionality and provide new, expanded, or enhanced services.

Qualifications

EDUCATION: There is no positive education requirement for this position.

IT COMPETENCIES: For all positions, individuals must have IT‐related experience (which may be may be obtained by paid or unpaid experience and/or completion of specific, intensive training (for example, IT certification), as appropriate) demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below:

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    To qualify at the GS-14 level:

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the IT Competencies above, applicants must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:
    • Overseeing the installation, configuration, and maintenance of applications programs in Linux;
    • Leading an IT team responsible for supporting continuous enterprise computer system operations; and
    • Providing technical support and guidance on IT products and services.

    Substitution of education for specialized experience is not applicable to this vacancy.

    How You Will Be Evaluated

    You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
