Category TQE - Thorlabs Quantum Electronics Location Quantum Electronics - Jessup, Maryland Full-Time/Part-Time Full-Time Description Purpose of the Position The Mechanical Engineering Technician will work on a team engineers that is developing, manufacturing, and troubleshooting new products for our customers. This position will be responsible drafting completed drawings for purchased components, production fixtures and finished products. The Technician will also support design and specification of mechanical components and fixtures for new product development and/or production use. The location of this position will be in Jessup, MD. Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to: Create fully specified drawings for production components, fixtures and finished products Design of mechanical fixtures/tooling for a variety of production processes (device assembly, test, coating, burn-in, etc.) Create assembly and test work instructions; train personnel Maintenance of internal CAD database Contribute effort in improving production fixtures and tooling towards efficient production Recommend design and procedure changes for continuous improvement to product quality, performance, and manufacturability Fabrication of components and fixtures for R&D and low volume production Have good personal skills and work habits. Able to work competently, neatly and safely, following instructions to complete tasks Physical Activities: The employee must be capable of working in a cleanroom environment for extended periods of time (2-3 hours at a time) wearing standard cleanroom clothing and protection. Qualifications Experience: 2 years in semiconductor, laser, or optical system production or R&D. Demonstrated ability to carry engineering work from specification to completion of a project, whether in an academic or industry setting. Education: Associate degree or higher in engineering, technology, or physical science; or US military electronics training Requirement can be waived for candidates with 5+ years direct experience and proven record of excellent delivery in directly related area. Specialized Knowledge and Skills: Ability to handle critical and fragile optical components and sensitive equipment Experience with hand tools, microscopes, and electronic and optical test and measurement equipment Proficiency in general computer use and Microsoft Office Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing production priorities Experience with optical fibers, hand soldering, laser welding, and optical fiber splicing equipment is preferred Thorlabs values its diverse environment and is proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
