Responsibilities

  • Uses the Integrated Library System (ILS) and other automated systems to create and maintain records and share information.
  • Provides physical processing and copy cataloging for incoming library materials in all formats.
  • Performs the duties associated with interlibrary loan, i.e. the location and borrowing/loaning of materials between libraries.
  • Performs the duties needed to maintain the order and appearance of library holdings insuring the proper location of holdings to assist in effective patron research.
  • Performs a variety of duties related to the acquisition and processing of library materials.
  • Performs simple, ready reference and reader assistance services utilizing basic reference tools; directing customers to general subject areas.

Qualifications

One year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade GS-04 within the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required.
1. Experience using an Integrated Library System
2. Experience in computer literacy to include use of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook), navigation of websites, and library automated systems
3. Experience providing customer service.

Examples of Specialized Experience include:
  • Using a library automated system, has searched for materials, created, updated, and deleted patron and bibliographic records and has performed charging, discharging, and renewing actions.
  • Using Microsoft Office products, has created, reviewed, updated and saved documents, spreadsheets, e-mails, and calendars.
  • Using library databases, has navigated sites to help patrons locate, view, and download documents and electronic resources.
  • In a library, has completed materials processing, materials repair, materials shelving, and assisted with inventories.
  • In a library, has assisted patrons with library equipment such as computer workstations, printers, copiers, and scanners.

Education

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-05 GRADE LEVEL: Four years of successfully completed education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation, or the equivalent, is a prerequisite may be substituted to meet the specialized experience requirement. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements.
