About the Position: As a Dental Hygienist, you will perform advanced prophylactic and preventative procedures in the treatment of patients with related medical and dental problems. This position is located at the U.S. Army Andrew Rader Dental Clinic, Fort Myer, Virginia.

Responsibilities

  • Examine the teeth and tissue for evidences of plaque and periodontal disease and charts findings, inspect the mouth and throat for evidence of disease; and interpret routine x-rays to identify tooth structures, calculus and abnormalities.
  • Perform complete and advanced oral prophylaxis on ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients (i.e. dental and oral anatomy, physiology, histology, preventive dentistry, oral pathology and periodontology).
  • Perform deep scaling, root planing, and sub-gingival curettage under local anesthesia; Administer local anesthesia, and take intra-oral impressions to prepare study models; smooth and polish rough edges of restorations and applies stannous fluoride.
  • Oversee preparation for dental hygiene treatment, using knowledge of infection control procedures and OSHA guidelines (i.e. dental and oral anatomy, physiology, histology, radiology, nutrition, and principles and techniques of preventive dentistry).
  • Interpret x-rays and identify tooth structures, calculus, and abnormalities; process radiographs on patients such as bite wing, periapical, and panoramic x-rays.
  • Provide individual and group oral health care instructions and specialized prophylactic and preventive dental hygiene procedures; examine patient's mouth, throat, and pharynx for abnormalities.
  • Instructs staff of proper techniques of oral hygiene to be applied to bedridden, handicapped, disabled, and chronically ill patients; Conduct lectures and demonstrations on oral health care.
  • Instruct patients at chair-side in oral hygiene, brushing, flossing techniques, and periodontal techniques; Remove overhanging margins of fillings, reduce sharp edges of fractured teeth, polish and finish amalgam restoration, etc.
  • Complete preliminary dental examinations on new dental service patients, using knowledge of dental and oral anatomy, physiology, histology, radiology, nutrition, etc.; Maintain medical and dental records.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: Perform advanced prophylactic and preventative procedures in the treatment of patients with related medical and dental problems; Experience in oral prophylaxis, treatment, preparation, instruction, postoperative care, and examinations.

Basic Requirements:
Licensure: Applicants for all grade levels and specializations must be currently licensed to practice as dental hygienists in a State or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia.

NOTE: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (l) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. The following meet these requirements:

(l) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others.

(2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided that such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence as determined by OPM or the employing agency.
