Job Description

The Senior Product Manager, Publishing Tools plays a critical role in growing our readership and deepening engagement across our core reader experience portfolio. This person will own the product roadmap of our toolbox for writing and editing stories and scheduling tasks and publication. This role is central in unlocking our Editorial teams' ability to publish great journalism quickly and efficiently and to make informed decisions around promotion and curation.

In this role, you will develop a deep understanding of newsroom users and how they work and identify ways to improve their workflows. You will balance support with innovation when it comes to product development and execution. You will collaborate with other product managers in the Core User Experience team, who are iteratively enhancing our homepage, story templates, apps and live experience. You will work in an Agile development environment to identify opportunities, define feature requirements, execute against release plans, and proactively remove obstacles to deliver on product and business strategies. In collaboration with stakeholders, you will develop recommendations for how we can streamline our existing toolset, evolve our tools to scale our digital coverage strategy and empower our newsroom to showcase the journalism that keeps our subscribers coming back.

What you'll do
  • Own the product roadmap and work with product leadership to align features and functionality to team and company objectives.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional team and stakeholders to gather requirements, prioritize the backlog, and plan sprints that result in meaningful improvements for your users.
  • Use data, research and input from other product areas to generate actionable insights and identify opportunities to evolve your product area to meet user needs.
  • Lead through influence by building trust and alignment with clear, proactive communication about your plans, progress, successes, and setbacks. You communicate priorities and progress to stakeholders in multiple functional areas and collaborate with newsroom partners to message releases and train users on new features.
  • Work closely with other product managers to continue to refine our understanding of how we can empower our Editorial teams to enhance our coverage for subscribers.
  • Test products at various stages of development to ensure seamless rollouts for our users.


Requirements

Minimum qualifications
  • 5+ years experience as a product owner, product manager or program manager
  • 3+ years experience in media, preferably as a product owner, product manager or program manager with experience in digital media or consumer-facing digital applications that require internal tooling as part of the product
  • Ability to think critically and solve problems in a fast-paced environment while maintaining strong attention to detail
  • Experience monitoring product performance and managing troubleshooting efforts in real time.
  • Ability to work well across disciplines and build partnerships that result in better product outcomes
  • Exceptional communication, writing, and presentation skills
  • Experience using quantitative and qualitative data to identify user needs and inform solutions that guide product feature development


Preferred qualifications
  • BA/BS degree
  • Working knowledge of industry standard software such as Microsoft Excel, Google Docs, Jira, Confluence
  • Experience collaborating with large, remote teams using communication tools such as Slack and Zoom
