Smart Mobility Coordinator

The Overview
The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) is seeking an experienced technologist that can manage multiple transportation related technology projects and advance the City’s Smart Mobility Program. The Smart Mobility Coordinator coordinates with project managers across the City and region to deliver technology projects on schedule and within budget.

This position invents the future by constantly scanning the environment to perceive need for innovation, new product or services and develops projects to meet these future needs. Much of this work involves researching new and emerging technologies for implementation. The Coordinator is responsible for eliciting needs and facilitating communication between stakeholders and functional teams to reach Smart Mobility Program goals. This position has a key role in aligning and ensuring security and compatibility of Mobility project data.

The Opportunity
  • Provides direction to align technology with Division mission and strategy, priorities and Smart Mobility Program needs.
  • Develops policy pertaining to transportation technology and IT operations within the department
  • Seeks to improve programmatic effectiveness by evaluating existing operations and making suggestions for efficiencies.
  • Manages multiple technology projects, most of which are grant funded
  • Manages transportation technology contracts and procurement
  • Coordinates with other T&ES divisions and City Departments to align the goals of the Smart Mobility Program with other City programs.
  • Collaborates with and represents the City in interjurisdictional and state transportation technology initiatives;
  • Analyzes and synthesizes information provided by Smart Mobility projects to evaluate proposed transportation technology;
  • Investigates new and existing technology and its application to business processes by providing expertise on technical trends and external practices including review of hardware, software and vendor interaction;
  • Conducts technical product evaluations and outlines requirements and specifications;
  • Performs leading role in developing protocols and procedures for integrating data sources related to Transportation Technology;
  • Oversees the development of maps and interactive dashboards to help convey transportation data in accessible and easy to understand formats.

The Ideal Candidate
To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess Bachelor’s Degree; at least Five (5) years of experience progressively responsible experience in urban or transportation planning and management of large scale urban projects, and completion of college-level courses in urban planning, transportation or transit planning, public administration, engineering, geography, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

To be considered as an ideal candidate, one should also possess a Master of Science degree in engineering, mathematics, information technology or related field with five years of progressively responsible experience in the transportation field and can complete projects with limited direction and guidance.

Additionally, t he ideal candidate should possess a mind for innovation, an appetite for challenge and a drive for meaningful work, is forward thinking with the ability to seek and use innovative technology to its maximum potential. Of equal importance is an advanced understanding and knowledge of analytical methods, program evaluation, business process analysis, performance measurement and management approaches, data collection, data visualization and effective written and oral communication skills, especially regarding technical documentation.
