Job Announcement

Coordinates with other county agencies and private sector companies the purchase, maintenance, assignment, and repair of approximately 1,000 marked and unmarked cruisers, sedans, trucks, sports utilities, special tactical vehicles, trailers, tractors, and buses. Maintains database while continually updating to ensure that the fleet is well maintained and replaced in a level expected in order to facilitate the needs of the department.

  • Within a County-operated fleet maintenance program:
  • Plans and schedules a comprehensive vehicle maintenance, repair, and inspection program for public safety vehicles;
  • Maintains records and data necessary to analyze the need for vehicle reassignments and replacements, and initiates such action;
  • Monitors and maintains a "ready reserve" fleet of emergency apparatus;
  • Studies operating costs for vehicles and recommends cost effective utilization procedures;
  • Investigates complaints regarding maintenance of vehicles;
  • Coordinates the procurement of vehicle spare parts and equipment;
  • Coordinates repair work and vehicle usage with other agencies as necessary;
  • Prepares reports. Within a contractor-operated fleet maintenance program:
  • Conducts inspections of 5% of vehicles repaired by contract mechanics;
  • Prepares weekly inspection reports;
  • Reviews repair documentation/invoices to ensure that rates for labor, parts, and materials are in accordance with contractual agreement;
  • Ensures that factory warranty and recall, scheduled maintenance, and inspection work is completed in accordance with contractual agreement;
  • Investigates customer complaints, determines appropriate resolution, documents findings and follows up to ensure resolution of problems.

  • Knowledge of vehicle operation and maintenance problems;
  • Knowledge of emergency and non-emergency vehicle parts and equipment;
  • Ability to maintain accurate records;
  • Ability to prepare written reports;
  • Ability to effectively plan and schedule activities;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and contract personnel;
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations;
  • Ability to comprehend and ensure compliance with contractual agreements.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to: high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; PLUS five years of experience in the supervision, coordination or management of motor vehicle maintenance/repair.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience with the general operation and use of police vehicles and associated emergency vehicle equipment (lights, sirens, camera/computer equipment)
  • Experience or training demonstrating the safe handling and operating principles of police weapons systems (firearms, CEW, etc.)
  • Experience in principles of general vehicle maintenance
  • Experience in principles of general facilities management
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills
  • Experience in Microsoft Office
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, credit check, driver's license check, polygraph exam and public safety background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work requires the ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment, sit for long periods, drive a vehicle, stoop, bend, and lift equipment weighing 20-30 lbs. Employment contingent on completion of background investigation and employee is subject to random drug testing. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
