Minimum Qualifications:

Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in Transportation or Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Business Administration or related field.
    • In lieu of a Bachelor's Degree, a High School Diploma/GED and four (4) years of traffic engineer or transit service planning experience may be considered

Experience
  • Four (4) or more years of Transportation Planning, Bus Routes Planning, Bus and Rail Operations or Intelligent Transportation Systems experience

Certification/Licensure
  • None

Preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree in Transportation or Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Business Administration or related field.

License:

Possession of or ability to rapidly acquire a valid District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia motor vehicle operator's permit issued from jurisdiction of residence.

Medical Group:

Ability to satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this class.

Mission Essential Designation:

In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

JOB SUMMARY

The Transit Bus Stop/Shelter Coordinator is responsible for administering the Authority's Bus Stop/Shelter Programs and associated assets that consists of over 11,000 bus stops and over 1,000 passenger bus shelters. Responsibilities include coordinating the placement of bus stops and passenger shelters and the analysis and subsequent development of bus route service changes. The incumbent coordinates with local, state, federal, private agencies, civic and community groups to establishment the location, relocation, and removal of bus stops and shelters throughout the region and at terminal rail stations. The incumbent supports the Authority's standards of comprehensive customer information programs for ensuring consistent, accurate and timely bus schedule information to customers at bus stops, on mobile hand-held devices, Trip Planner, third party and Internet services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Develops, monitors, and maintains the Bus Stop and Shelter Program in accordance with established goals, policies, and procedures of the Authority and ensures WMATA's bus stops and shelters are continuously maintained in a state of good repair to serve our customers in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Investigates and conducts site visits as warranted, in response to reports of damage to bus stop poles, sign heads, bus shelters and/or the bus stop environment in order to effect repairs and necessary improvements.
  • Represents the Authority in coordinating and negotiating the placement of bus stop signs and shelters with local, state, federal, and private agencies, ensuring the environment is safe and adequate for bus operations and customer utilization in accordance with relevant standards including ADA compliance.
  • Represents WMATA and promotes positive and cooperative relationships with WMATA stakeholders in meeting with Jurisdictional partners and transportation officials to reach consensus and resolve issues related to WMATA's internal operational bus stop requirements and needs of its external customers.
  • Reviews bus service changes and determines stop-by-stop adjustments, taking into consideration operational requirements, passenger considerations and the placement of bus route information on bus stop signs to ensure bus stop head signage information is up to date and accurately reflecting the latest service adjustments.
  • Coordinates proper placement of bus stops and bus bays at Metrorail stations, ensuring safety of customers and bus operating employees. Maintains documentation related to the installation of new bus stops, changes to existing bus stop locations.
  • Ensures that the placement of bus stops aligns with published and online customer information and eliminates confusion and complaints from bus and rail operations, passengers.
  • Conducts on-site, system-wide inspections of the bus stops and bus shelters and prepares repair orders and routine enhancement assignments to ensure ongoing maintenance and state of good repair.
  • Utilizes asset management software (i.e. Maximo) for purposes of creating work orders. Maintains a readily accessible data sheet of repair work orders as a tool to conduct follow up reviews of stop sites to ensure a timely response to necessary repairs. Issues daily work orders and instructions to maintenance personnel, supervising the preparation of the bus stop sign graphics, establishing, abolishing and relocating of bus stops and shelters and monitors the work to ensure proper and timely completion.
  • Reviews and determines placement of trailblazer signs for vehicular and pedestrian traffic to and from Metrorail station sites to ensure efficient bus operations and passenger way-finding. Constant coordination and collaboration with PLNT service crews and supervisors.
  • Coordinates with the Office of Information Technology and Bus Operations Scheduling GIS platform to develop and maintain a comprehensive computerized database of all bus stop and shelter specifications and any pertinent information needed to administer the Programs effectively.
  • Designs and prepares diagrams, maps, and charts for WMATA Board presentations, public meetings, reports and operations displays as required in order to support high-level customer communications of operational impact relevant to bus stop improvements.
  • Coordinates the selection of shelter sites, development of site plan drawings, and monitors the installation for the date of shelter availability with the local jurisdictions and WMATA offices. Ensures smooth implementation of bus shelter enhancements and clear communication of needed support such as bus zones or parking restrictions signage for which jurisdiction action is required.
  • Responds to complaints and requests from jurisdictional staff, the public, and WMATA offices concerning the Programs, either by phone or written communication to ensure deficiencies and safety hazards relative to bus stops or shelters are constantly identified and quickly addressed and resolved. Monitors online Bus Stop Customer Service Case communications daily and responds accordingly through site verification and generation of work orders to resolve the issue reported.
  • Maintains GPS data, bus stop photos, attributes, headings, and other critical data related to bus stops. Maintains and operates special technical equipment for collecting, measuring, and maintaining complete set of bus stop data required by various systems to ensure the most recent data on each bus stop's attributes are maintained to include physical locations and images for compliance with the American with Disabilities Act and established WMATA standards and GIS systems and online customer information systems have up to date visual tools and data for bus stop attributes, locations, and trip planning software.
