Assistant Director of Residential Communities

Housing and Residence Life (HRL) is currently seeking applications from qualified candidates for the Assistant Director of Residential Communities position. About the Department: Housing and Residence Life is a self-supporting auxiliary organization within the University Life unit of George Mason University. HRL serves a highly diverse population of approximately 6,200 students, the majority of which are undergraduates living in over 40 traditional, suite, and apartment-style residence halls in three campuses within the vibrant Northern Virginia area. HRL employs over 170 full-time and graduate staff members and over 350 undergraduate student staff members. Responsibilities: The Assistant Director of Residential Communities is a live-in professional staff member primarily responsible for the overall management of a residential area housing approximately 1,500 undergraduate students. Responsibilities include supervising professional and graduate-level Community Directors, primary oversight for all administrative functions within the assigned area, and supporting departmental and divisional goals and initiatives through various collaborative efforts. This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Residential Communities.

The Assistant Director of Residential Communities will have primary responsibilities focused in the areas of supervision and leadership, collaborations and partnerships, and administration:

Supervision and Leadership: * Provide leadership and oversight for one of four residential areas; supporting the mission of Housing and Residence Life, University Life, and George Mason University; * Directly supervise full-time professional Community Directors and Graduate Assistant staff; provide leadership and indirect supervision for undergraduate student staff, including Resident Assistants and Community Assistants; * Oversee the implementation and execution of the residential curriculum to support and attain departmental, divisional, and University goals; * Evaluate job performance of Community Directors and Graduate Assistants in assigned area by providing ongoing feedback and annual performance reviews; assist Community Directors with completion and execution of their Professional Development Plan; * Aid and advise Residential Communities staff in the areas of diversity, inclusion, and social justice; * Serve in the Assistant Director duty rotation to provide evening, weekend, and holiday support and assistance to Residential Communities staff; * Support Residential Communities staff in crisis response and student intervention efforts in collaboration with the Housing and Residence Life Care and Outreach team; * Actively support and comply with all University policies, department regulations, vision, and goals; * Assist in the planning and implementation of Community Director, Graduate Assistant, and undergraduate student staff training; * Provide guidance to Community Directors and Graduate Assistants related to performance management of all undergraduate student staff; * Lead area staff meetings for the Residential Communities team which will represent multiple units within Housing and Residence Life (IT, maintenance, facilities, operations, etc.); * Attend student staff team meetings on an as-needed basis. Collaboration and Partnerships: * Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all Housing and Residence Life staff; * Assist the Residential Services staff with student focused marketing and communication related to Housing Selection and other assignments-related processes; * Serve on departmental and University Life committees focused on the academic success and co-curricular experience of residential students; * Engage in the execution of all Housing and Residence Life initiatives, including the residential curriculum, in assigned communities; * Oversee the successful implementation of all University Life and University-wide student success and retention initiatives in the residence halls; * Serve as a University conduct hearing officer for escalated student incidents; * Participate in departmental, divisional, and University-wide committee and work stream opportunities. Administrative Duties: * Provide leadership and administrative support to all operations within assigned residential communities; * Support efforts connected to assessment for departmental and University Life goals and objectives; * Oversee coordination of large scale departmental operations including, but not limited to, semester opening and closings, summer turn processes, early arrivals, and break housing; * Provide oversight for follow-up related to maintenance and facilities needs and projects; * Support processes focused on occupancy management and assignments accuracy in collaboration with the Residential Services staff; * Within assigned residential communities, oversee purchases and vendor contracts for fiscal accuracy and ongoing reconciliation processes within departmental budgets; * Ensure accurate damage billing and key/access management procedures in collaboration with Residential Services and Facilities staff; * Ensure appropriate case management, follow-up, and student support in consultation with the Housing and Residence Life Care and Outreach team. Other Duties: * Serve as essential personnel and respond to emergencies and crisis situations that occur within the residential communities; * Be willing to work flexible night and weekend hours as necessary; * In the event of a vacancy, Assistant Directors should be prepared to cover essential responsibilities of the vacated position(s) in their area; * Perform other duties as assigned by Associate Director of Residential Communities or designee.

Required Qualifications: * Masters degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; * 2-5 years full-time experience working in residence life and/or residential services; * Proven ability in establishing successful new programs or partnerships in a higher education setting. * Experience in leadership and supervision of undergraduate student staff is required. Preferred Qualifications: * Significant experience in residence hall management, student and community development, and crisis response; * Masters degree in student affairs administration, higher education, counseling, or a related field.
