Assistant Director for Strategic Engagement / Institute for a Sustainable Earth Research

About the Institute for a Sustainable Earth: ISE has been designed to connect members of the Mason community with others across the Mason community - and with other communities, policy-makers, businesses and organizations - to address the world's pressing sustainability and resilience challenges. A community of several hundred faculty have come together to support the goals of ISE. Together, they represent a range of academic disciplines from every college on campus. ISE aims to amplify the work of these faculty and the college level centers to which they belong by serving as a connector, convener and communicator. ISE works to catalyze partnerships and support transdisciplinary research efforts that advance solutions to local, regional, and global sustainability challenges. Mason and ISE utilize the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals framework to focus research and action across the many interconnected dimensions of sustainability. Through strategic partnerships and programs that enable deep engagement with local, state, and federal government agencies, non-governmental organizations, businesses, communities, and other organizations, ISE is creating opportunities for Mason's sustainability research and scholarship have impact.

About the Position: Reporting to ISE's Executive Director, the Assistant Director for Strategic Engagement will work collaboratively with the ISE team, Mason leadership, and faculty to develop and manage programs that connect the university, faculty, and students with key stakeholders (including local, state, and federal government, non-governmental and community organizations, and the private sector) to enable opportunities for Mason faculty and students to collaborate externally, enhancing the research and scholarship portfolio and reputation of the university.

Responsibilities: * Contribute to the strategic development of ISE by identifying and fostering opportunities for external engagement; * Form relationships with external partners and prepare MOUs with partner organizations that promote the goals of ISE; * Collaborate with leadership and faculty to identify strategic opportunities for building capacity and supporting faculty and student engagement with external partners; * Develop and scale programs that support transdisciplinary research and scholarship with the ISE community; * Engage partners in Northern Virginia and Washington DC to facilitate the transfer and application of innovative policies, practices, and technologies to make the region a model of sustainability for the world; * Identify opportunities and prepare proposals to resource partnerships, programs, and initiatives; * Communicate regularly with the ISE community to ensure full participation; * Collaborate with other university offices and units - including Research Development, Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Graduate and Undergraduate Affairs - to ensure integration with other Mason activities, goals, and objectives.

Required Qualifications: * A Master's degree in a discipline relevant to the work of ISE; * Broad knowledge of sustainability science and its role in policy and practice; * 4+ years of experience in partnership development, stewardship, and engagement; * 2+ years of experience in program development and/or management.

Preferred Qualifications: * A terminal degree in a discipline relevant to the work of ISE (Ph.D. or similar); * 6+ years of experience in partnership development, stewardship, and engagement; * 4+ years of experience in program development and/or management; * Experience developing partnerships and/or working closely with a variety of external stakeholders (local, state and federal government, NGOs, private sector, etc.); * Experience working to put research into action in commercial ecosystems and/or through policy engagement; * Experience developing and implementing strategic vision; * Experience developing major proposals for external support; * Experience in a large dispersed university environment.

Additional Desired Competencies: * Exceptional emotional intelligence and initiative, with a demonstrated capacity for creative, human-centered problem solving; * Excellent project management skills with experience managing multiple, simultaneous work streams; * Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication.
