Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking an Engineering Lead to join our News Articles team. This team works closely with engineering, product, and design to build new features that enhance our reading experience. You'll be responsible for participating in each step of the development lifecycle from development and code review to automated testing and deployments.

We aim to maintain an accessible and performant site. This team will ensure that our vision impaired have the best experience possible on our site, and that those with slow internet connections can experience the Washington Post in an efficient and pleasurable way. We'll be optimizing our performance in search so as to deliver the news to the most readers possible.

The Engineering Lead oversees the day-to-day operations for the development, implementation, administration and support of his/her unit's work. Engineering Leads ensure the timely and efficient installation and operation of information systems consistent with department policies, procedures and requirements. Engineering Lead sets priorities, in consultation with clients, and supervises a small staff (4 to 6 employees) and are responsible for overall employee development and performance management. The Engineering Lead ensure implementation of IT departmental goals and objectives within their unit.

**This position can be 100% remote in the US for the right candidate**

  • Leads a software engineering team in the development of assigned software applications and tools.
  • Sets software engineering project schedules, defines project parameters and tasks and monitors project tasks.
  • Keeps the "vision" of the project, leading others toward its completion.
  • Oversees employee development and performance management within their unit.
  • Manage on-site contractors in their unit including interviewing, selecting/recruiting, assigning work, reviewing work, and tracking expenses.
  • Assures team compliance with department policies and procedures.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with client departments. Understands clients' business processes and objectives. Balances response to clients' requests, requirements and priorities with adherence to IT strategic direction..
  • Assigns responsibilities and tasks to team members based on their skill level, task requirements, and TWP's business needs. Empowers individuals to carry out assignments with appropriate levels of supervision. Participates in teaching and training members of work group / team.
  • Assists Managers in managing capital, expense and headcount budgets.
  • Makes needed adjustments to short-term priorities.
  • Interacts with stakeholders to share information and improve workflow processes.

  • Bachelor's or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience.
  • 1+ years of experience managing engineers is strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively present and discuss technical and business issues appropriate to the audience.
  • Knowledge of general management practices (e.g., performance management, client service, quality assurance, project management).
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative in translating company and department objectives into tactical and operational tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to self-start and maintain momentum.
