The University of Maryland’s Integrated Operation Center within the Division of Information Technology (DIT) is responsible for 24×7, 365 days a year monitoring of production applications, systems, and networks. This position is responsible for managing a team that ensures our production infrastructure is stable and has high availability. The team configures and maintains complex monitoring software including Nagios, Spectrum, and Dynatrace.

This role is responsible for continually improving the University of Maryland’s monitoring capabilities. The role requires the ability to work well with various teams across the division to ensure alerts are quickly addressed. Experience with automation and process improvement and modernization will be necessary. A technical background in systems, applications, or network management is required. The manager must understand the importance of monitoring, and have experience setting standards and working with teams to adopt those standards.

Minimum qualifications

EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field.

EXPERIENCE
Ten years of progressive experience in Information Technology, including at least three years’ supervisory experience of a team of 3 or more staff managing a group that monitors applications, systems, or networks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Strong knowledge of Windows/Linux/Unix environments
Strong planning, communication and analytical skills.
Ability to lead and motivate the workforce as well as develop staff capabilities.
Available after hours for on-call support.
Familiarity with fundamental networking/server/application monitoring and with creating templates for monitoring of all hardware and software elements
A working knowledge and ability to troubleshoot, guide, and train the team on at least 1 network monitoring and 1 application monitoring tool:
Networking: CA Spectrum, eHealth, or equivalent
Applications: Dynatrace, Nagios, or equivalent
Competency in most aspects of monitoring tool administration, for example, configuration and implementing alerts for all the required hardware and software components
Programming experience in any applicable language such as Perl, Python, Javascript or Shell

Physical demands: predominantly operates in an office environment. Some periods of time may be spent in computer room and communications equipment spaces for installation, testing, and troubleshooting. Some work (less than 5%) requires moving and lifting of heavy networking equipment. Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
