Job Description:

The High School Lead Administrator for Specialized Instruction assists the principal in leading the Specialized Instruction department of each of the campuses, collaborating with all building administrators and teachers to ensure each campus is well-planned and efficient in its delivery of student services and overall support to students with disabilities.This position also oversees that Individual Education Plans (IEP) are in compliance with state and federal laws and lead all areas as they related to special education direct services for students.

This job reports to the High School Principal.

Qualifications:

Education: Master's degree in job related area.

Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education license required, or eligibility to obtain one, with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision.

Experience:
  • Administrative and teaching experience related to working in socio-economically and culturally diverse school settings.
  • Knowledge of special education law, state and federal compliance.
  • Demonstrated expertise reviewing and providing feedback to special education staff and parents related to special education services or processes.
  • Knowledge of the special education requirements related to parent consent, service provision, discipline and progress monitoring in compliance with local, state and federal laws.
  • Demonstrated expertise in evidence based curriculum design, assessment, and instructional practices.
  • Documented experience in leading secondary educational program development and implementation, including professional development in evidence based best practices for special education student populations.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience necessary to work effectively with students, teachers, administrators, families, and community members.
  • Ability to successfully communicate and collaborate with central office Specialized Instruction teams.

Essential Functions:
  • Reinforces the vision, mission, and priorities of ACPS and the high school and ensure that the special education department is in line with this vision and mission.
  • Collaborates with school principal and campus administrators to ensure that all students succeed in a rigorous, engaging, authentic, and personalized learning environment for special education.
  • Facilitates problem solving and decision making on a daily basis, including ongoing collaboration with other leaders to ensure quality IEPs and proper implementation of services to students.
  • Ensures that special education services are implemented in a timely and efficient manner to all learners in accordance with their IEPs, especially those who may require extra intervention and support.
  • Assist high school principal and the Office of Specialized Instruction in providing information and data required to develop administrative reports and supporting the overall leadership of the special education department.
  • Oversee and lead Specialized Instruction Department meetings, in conjunction with the Accountability Specialist and Lead Teachers.
  • Participate in a variety of meetings for the purpose of representing Specialized Instruction and the school ensuring the development of comprehensive services for students with disabilities.
  • Evaluates a cross-section of teachers and support staff.
  • Oversees areas critical to the efficient running of a school day including scheduling, transportation, and supervision of instructional assistants and teachers within the CityWide program.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the Specialized Instruction Department.
  • Provides weekly updates for the Administrative Team regarding Specialized Instruction and Compliance.
  • Provide recommendations regarding resource expenditures necessary to ensure the effective delivery of services to students with disabilities.
  • Observe and support classroom instruction to evaluate the implementation of effective specialized instructional strategies, use of instructional interventions, data collection and classroom management.
  • Respond to inquiries if requested by school administration and Central Office and other community contacts to provide information and/or direction.
  • Responsible for working with the state and central office before, during and after state audits.
  • Oversee the Accountability Specialist and Lead Teachers for Special Education.

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.
